"Attention, everyone. We will be arriving at Florida in twenty minutes. The time now is 11:15a.m. and temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. Please, fasten your seat belts and remain seated until further instructions while we prepare for landing. And once again, thank you for flying with Flamingo Airlines."
Sheila put her headphones back on and rested her head back on her chair after the announcement. She had left Denver earlier that morning after staying with her family for more than a week. She was glad to be returning back to Florida and she was also grateful that her mum had fully recovered. She had wanted to call Steven to pick her up at the airport, but while chatting with Alice last night, she volunteered. She knew Alice would be at the airport before she landed.
The plane landed at exactly 11:40a.m. Sheila got her hand luggage from the overhead storage compartment and made her way out of the plane with the other passengers. The airport was really busy as three other flights had also just landed, one being an international flight from the United Kingdom, and she had to shove her way through to the Arrivals Unit to retrieve her luggage. She turned on her phone while waiting for her luggage and dialled Alice.
"Hey, girl! Landed yet?" Alice said, as soon as she picked up.
"Yes, we just landed. I want to get my luggage though. Are you at the airport already?"
"Yep. Waiting outside. Uhmm... I'm driving a black SUV. Just call me when you're out and I'll come over to you."
"Wait, SUV?" Sheila knew Alice did not own a black car. Or had she gotten a new one while she'd been gone?
"Whose car are you driving?"
"Find your luggage first, Sheila. Talk later," Alice replied, laughing over the phone before she hung up.
Sheila had stood for about ten minutes when she finally spotted her blue box on the conveyor belt. She waited till it got nearer to her and then reached out and picked it up. As she tried to get the rollers out, the box fell away from her, breaking the handle she was holding on to.
"Oh my God," she exclaimed, squatting to the level of the box. A figure squatted with her and as she looked up, she was staring into the bluest eyes she'd ever seen.
"Having trouble with your luggage?" the man asked, with a smile that revealed dazzling white teeth. He looked like a model.
"The handle just broke. But don't worry about that, I can manage. Thank you," Sheila explained. But the man waited and helped her stand the box. He introduced himself as Nathan. When he stood, Sheila could see that he was quite tall with jet black hair and broad shoulders. She was sure he also had clearly defined abs underneath the crisp, blue shirt he had on. He looked too perfect to not have abs. He offered to carry it for her to where she could get a taxi, since he had just a knapsack that he hung on one shoulder.
"Oh, I'm not getting a taxi. My friend's out front waiting for me."
They walked together outside and Sheila waved when she spotted Alice leaning on the door of a black car. Alice waved back excitedly and ran over to her. She looked at Nathan, gave a little wave and then gave Sheila a side eye. Sheila rolled her eyes and laughed softly. Without speaking, she knew what her best friend was asking.
"Nathan, meet Alice, my best friend in the whole world and roommate. Alice, this is Nathan..."Sheila began introducing.
"...her luggage carrier. Nice to meet you, Alice," Nathan cut in and extended his free hand for a handshake with Alice. Sheila immediately said he was not her luggage carrier while laughing. Alice led Nathan over to the car and helped him put the luggage in the trunk.
"Hey, you have anybody picking you up? We can drop you off where you're headed," Sheila offered.
"No, I wouldn't inconvenience you like that," Nathan politely declined. "One of my guys was supposed to meet me here, but his phone isn't going. I'll just take a taxi over to his place. I'm guessing he's either busy with work or dead." Alice burst into laughter.
"Your friend and my boss could be twins then. If he ain't working, he's probably died," she said and the trio shared a good laugh.
"But really, it's not trouble to us. We can actually drop you off. Save you a couple bucks so you can add it to your 'Enjoy Florida' budget," Alice continued. Nathan lifted up his brows and chuckled.
"Do people have budget plans like that?"
"I had one like that when I went to France. But I eventually used it to take care of myself while attending a culinary school there. Life doesn't always work out the way we put it down in pen and paper," Sheila replied him.
"Ah, I see. Alright. I'll take up your offer. Thank you so much for your kindness," he responded. He gave Alice the address and they all got into the car.
Sheila started up a conversation as soon as they drove out of the airport and they got to know Nathan was here on a vacation and was leaving to Germany for a Masters program in December. Alice dropped him off at the address he'd given her, and her and Sheila watched as he entered the compound behind the large gate they were parked in front of.
"That is one large house. His friend must be super rich," Alice suggested.
"Tell me about it," Sheila agreed.
After dropping off Nathan, Alice and Sheila headed to a car wash. She finally told Sheila that the car belonged to Evan and he had lent it to her when her car developed a flat tire earlier that day because she had to come to the airport and instructed her to have it thoroughly washed before she returned it.
"Nice of him to lend you his car. He doesn't seem like such a bad guy after all," Sheila voiced out, while munching a chocolate bar. They were sitting in a café opposite the car wash.
"Eh, he can be sweet when he wants to. I met him the day I went out for a run. And...we talked," Alice said and turned her face away from Sheila.
"Talked about what, Alice?"
"Nothing pretty serious. Just my fears and his."
Sheila figured Alice didn't want to tell her more about what she and Evan had spoken about that day and didn't Probe further. She would hear about it whenever Alice decided to share. After their chocolates, Alice dropped her off at their apartment and helped her carry her luggage to the house before she headed back to work around past 3p.m.
