Alice opened the door of her apartment to the sight of Steven and Sheila making out on the couch in the living room.
“Oh my God, guys!” she exclaimed, her hands flying to her eyes. Sheila burst out in laughter and got up from the couch.
“Why are you covering your eyes, sweetie? We weren’t naked,” Sheila said, pulling down Alice’s hands from her eyes. But Alice eyes were still squeezed shut.
“Is Steven dressed?” she asked.
“I was never naked, Allie,” Steven replied, with a snort and loud laughter.
Alice finally opened her eyes to find Sheila staring at her with a naughty smile on her face.
“I didn’t expect you to be home so late. What kept you so long at the office?”
“Evan had something he wanted me to do. We’re targeting a contract with some Spanish delegates from a company in Mexico some time within the month. And we had to write a befitting proposal.”
“I made some dinner, in case you’re hungry,” Sheila offered.
“I feel like my lunch hasn’t digested yet,” Alice declined, making Steven burst into another round of laughter.
“Steven’s actually here to see you, Alice.”
“Nuh-uh. He’s not. I will go into my room now and I will give you both some quiet time to complete what y’all already started. Okay?” Alice said, turning in the direction of her room.
“No, seriously, Alice. I came to see you. There’s something I need to let you know,” Steven said, stopping Alice in her tracks. She turned around and came over to the living chair, dropping her bag on the centre table.
“No kissy cooties on this, huh?” she asked, pointing at an armchair.
“Oh, Steven actually spilled some c*m on that when we were...” Sheila began.
“Sheila!” Steven exclaimed, amidst laughter. Alice looked shell shocked and was walking over to another armchair, even when Sheila kept yelling she was only joking.
“I know when you’re joking, Sheila. That wasn’t your joking face then though,” Alice teased. She was laughing now.
After the laughter had died down, Steven got out his phone and played the recording between Clinton Clark and someone who they didn’t know yet for Alice. She listened quietly, making facial expressions whenever she heard some things that shocked her. As with Sheila, Steven didn’t let her listen till the end and stopped it after they’d heard what he wanted them to hear.
“He’s stalking Sheila too?” Alice spoke, after Steven had paused the recording. The blood from Alice’s face was drained and she looked like she’d seen a ghost.
“He was. He called off stalking on her after she’d travelled to Denver. But now he knows she’s back and I’m guessing he will resume if he isn’t stopped before then. Now we know for sure that Clinton is the one stalking you.”
“Why haven’t we taken this to the police? This is enough evidence, right?” Alice asked, looking from Steven to Sheila. Sheila merely shook her head and came to sit on the sofa with Steven.
“We will be punished for breaking and entering. We didn’t really obtain the recording under honest means. My brother and I bugged Clark’s house,” Stephen explained. Alice’s hands flew to her mouth. The fact that Steven was doing all these and taking a lot of risks just to catch her stalker was touching to her, and at that particular moment, she just wanted to hug both of them and thank them over and over again.
“We have a way to catch him though,” Steven said, sliding his phone on to the center table. “You’re going to have to be the bait, Alice,” he added.
“Steven, no...” Sheila began, nudging Steven’s arm.
“It’s the only way, Sheila.”
“How am I.. What do you mean use me as bait?” Alice asked, shaking her head.
“Well, we want you to chat with the person who sent you that... The photo shopped picture of Sheila dead,” Steven said slowly. Alice turned to look at him slowly. Was he nuts? How could he expect her to do something like that?
“You were making a lot of sense until the last statement you made, Stevie,” she finally said, looking away from him and Sheila.
“Allie, it’s the only way. Chat him up. Tell him he’ll never be able to get you. Tell him he’s a fool for thinking he could ever do this job for Clark and go scot free, and that you’ve got tabs on him and he won’t walk away from this...” Steven rambled on moving closer to Alice.
“Stop, Steven. Stop it!” Alice exclaimed. “Do you understand what you’re asking me to do? He’s going to come after me! He could kill me, or even Sheila because I’m bruising his ego. People like Clinton Clark are psychopaths.”
“Clark’s not working alone, Alice,” Sheila said. She’d been quiet all this while. She was still not in support of what Steven suggested but she knew there was no way around it. They had to fast track whatever plan Clinton Clark and his cohort had, before they hit them where it would hurt, right when they didn’t suspect it and walk away free.
“He hasn’t been the one directly stalking you. He’s too busy for that. He is paying someone to do it. But from the discussion between the person and him that Derrick heard today, he doesn’t want the person to ever reveal he had any hand in this. He wants to take the glory of successfully stalking you and taking out his revenge on you alone.”
“So if I tell the man who sent me that picture, that I know he’s working for Clark...” Alice began.
“...Clark will show up to let you know that he’s the main guy and there’s no one else,” Steven completed. Alice looked at Sheila who only gave a small nod with her lips tightly squeezed together.
“But what if Clark hurts me before we can get him red-handed?” Alice asked in a voice barely audible. Her eyes were wet as she looked like she was about to cry any minute.
“You will have on a microphone and a compact camera on you. We will be able to hear what you are saying, as well as what he is saying. And we will be able to see you too. Once we’ve heard enough, we’ll be in there before he can do anything to you,” Steven explained.
“And what if he doesn’t even show up? What if he shows up and you guys don’t know he has? How will I communicate to you?” Alice kept asking. She sounded very scared that Sheila wanted to tell Steven to call the whole thing off.
“Believe me, Alice,” Steven began, holding Alice’s hands in his. “We will know when he shows up. You’re going to be safe. And we’ll protect you.”
“Who’s we?”
“I, Sheila and Derrick.”
Alice wanted to believe him, but a bout of fear still gripped her. Steven suggested she chat up the stalker later tonight. But Alice did not want to do it while she was alone nor did she even want to do it herself. She shook her head, got her phone out from her bag and handed it over to Steven.
