Evan was up early the next morning. He had finally gone to bed by some minutes past 3a.m. after he had put Genevieve to bed. She had cried in his room for a long time and talked about how she was trying her best to not let her husband’s legacy end, but she sincerely did not want to stop neither he nor Rebecca from doing what either of them wanted to do. Evan had held her and explained to her that he did not mind managing the company. After all, it was the money that came from Sterling Industries that funded their lifestyles, himself included. He just wanted her to stop sponsoring Liam’s excess. Genevieve had promised to do better and Evan hoped with all his heart that she would put her words to action.
He looked at the clock opposite his bed and saw it was well past 7:30a.m. The headache he’d come back from the office with was gone and he felt a lot better than he did yesterday. He picked up his phone charging by his bedside and turned it on. There were no missed calls from Nathan like he’d expect, so he dialled him. He picked on the first ring.
“Couldn’t sleep? Why’re you up so early?” Nathan’s breezy voice filtered in through the phone.
“I just woke up. Good morning, Nat. Where are you?”
“That’s not your problem. I just figured you needed sometime to cool off so I bounced for the night. Plus, your mum was home and I thought you guys would have a lot to talk about,¥ Nathan explained. Evan smiled to himself and thought about how good Nathan’s instincts were. As much as he sometimes hated to admit, Nathan was actually really good in knowing when to do or say stuff and when not too. Evan was sure that if Nathan were to be in his house the night before, he would not have been able to say as much as he said to his mum.
“Thank you, Nathan. Really,” Evan said, with a hint of a smile in his face.
“Don’t thank me yet. I dunno if I made stuff better or worse. By the way, heard from Alice? Are you at the office yet?”
Evan ran his fingers through his ruffled hair. He had forgotten that he’d upset Alice at the office and said some mean things to her as well.
“I’ll call her before I shower. I’m not at the office yet. I’ll just tell her to come in to work and that she’s not fired. Or do you think an email is better?” Evan asked. Nathan burst into a short laugh and then sighed. Evan could almost see him shaking his head at him as he sighed.
“What happened to calling her and apologizing for bring such a douchebag last night?” Nathan asked. Evan got off his bed and walked over to his bathroom to pee. He put the call on speaker and placed it on the bathroom before pulling down his night shorts slightly.
“I was upset. She was too, we both were. If anyone is to apologize, she’s to initiate it, Nat. I agree I like her defiance and strong-willed attitude, but yesterday she took it too far. We were both being very picky and besides, I’m her boss,” Evan answered, turning on the tap and squeezing soap from the dispenser beside his sink to wash his hands with.
“Besides, I got upset with you too and we’re good now even if I didn’t say anything.”
“Because I’m already used to your bullshit, Evan. I’ll work with what I’ve got. But Alice made some salient points yesterday and you will just have to say sorry if you want her back as your personal assistant. Unless you don’t,” Nathan concluded. Evan looked at his reflection in the mirror as he thought about that. Would Alice really not come to work today? Did she think he was serious when he said she’d be fired if she walked past his door? He scoffed. Of course she would think he was serious. He never said anything he didn’t mean and now that he has said something he didn’t exactly mean, it would mean going through a lot to rectify the mistake.
As much as Alice was strong-willed and stubborn sometimes, he liked her drive. She was also really good at her job and that was the most important factor. He couldn’t afford to hire a new secretary now, not with the meeting with the delegates from Think Tank coming up soon.
“She’ll come to work. I feel so,” Evan said to Nathan, and nodding, as if trying to convince himself too that Alice would definitely show up.
“Even if she does, Evan, apologize to that girl. I gotta go now. Breakfast time,” Nathan advised and hung up before Evan could ask him who was making him breakfast.
Evan brushed and showered and while he dressed, he could perceive the smell of French toast wafting its way from the kitchen into the room. He headed out to the living room, stopping by the kitchen. Genevieve was cooking still dressed in her night wear. She looked up at me with a bright smell when she saw him come in.
“Evan! Good morning,” she greeted, in a sing song voice. Her long hair that usually fell over her shoulders was packed in a messy bun making her look younger. Evan smiled at her.
“Morning, Mum.”
“Breakfast before you leave? Hope you don’t mind.”
They had a quiet breakfast together before Evan left for work. Edith greeted him when he came in from the elevator. He replied her and headed to his office. As he passed by Alice’s office, he stopped and stood outside the door for a while. It didn’t sound like anyone was inside, so he pushed it open.
The office was just as messy as it was the night before, an indication that she hadn’t made it to work yet. There were files scattered around on her desk and her chair. Her drawers were flung open as well, probably left that way because she was in a rush while searching for a particular document, and the coffee stand had three dirty cups on it. There was also leftover coffee in the jug that was now cold and looked like dirty water.
Evan went out of the office and closed the door behind him. He had a lot of work to do and he hoped Alice would show up to work soon enough for them to get started. He didn’t believe she would not show up.
