Evan pulled up in front of the building where Alice and Sheila’s apartment was. He turned off the ignition and got out of the car to open the door for Alice. She had already opened it and was trying to come out when he got to her door. “I can get out by myself, Evan,” she said, holding on to the door for support. She did not want her neighbours to see Evan carrying her up through the elevator to her apartment. “You’re going to put more strain on your ankle, Alice. I know you don’t want me to but it’s best if I just carried you,” Evan suggested. Alice groaned. “Okay, can I at least get your friend, Sheila, to come down and help you?” he asked as Alice held on to his arm so she could stand straight. She shook her head. “Actually, Sheila is not home. She’s not coming home tonight,” Alice
