Alice woke up before her alarm the following morning. For some reason, she was excited to start at her new job. After showering and brushing, she dressed up in the dress she and Sheila had picked up the night before. Sheila was already in the kitchen when she came out of her room and they had a breakfast of toast and coffee together. Then Alice grabbed her car keys and headed out. Sheila was going to First Bites later in the day as she had an appointment with her dentist first.
Walking through the large swing doors of Sterling Industries sent a rush of dopamine through Alice. She couldn’t believe she was finally working here. It hadn’t exactly been a dream for her, but she had known about the company and had fantasized about what it would feel like to work there. And today that fantasy was her reality.
She met Edith at the front desk and greeted her.
“Welcome officially to Sterling Industries, Miss James,” Edith replied Alice jovially. Alice smiled nicely at her and reminded herself that this is who she would be working in close proximity with, not Evan. Edith gave a tour on the building and the facilities in it, helped her get her worker ID and introduced her to members of staff that had arrived at work. Finally she showed her to her office.
“You do know you’re Mr. Sterling’s personal secretary and as such, he will be calling on you a lot. He will also call on you when he wants to get to me. So keep your eyes on the hallway. Sometimes he doesn’t like to use the intercom. If you see him walking down the hallway, best believe he is looking for someone,” Edith explained.
“What? I thought I was going to be working with you a lot more often,” Alice asked. What was this talk about Evan calling on her a lot? And why couldn’t he use the phone instead of walking out of his office like a hall monitor?
“Oh honey, everyone works with me. So, of course, you’ll be working with me. Just more with Mr. Sterling,” Edith replied, with a wink and excused herself.
Alice took a look around her new office after Edith had left. It was nice and almost cozy. It had a normal office desk and a swirling office chair. Two padded chairs sat opposite hers for any guests she might have at the office. She had always wanted one of those. A desktop computer sat on the side of the table directly in front of the chair. There was a coffee stand at the far end of the office close to the door and a tall mahogany bookshelf just beside it. A chest of drawers stood at the other end of the room. It was empty for now and she knew before the end of the week, it would be filled with files.
She got out her phone and took a couple of selfies at different corners of the office. Then she sunk into one of the chairs and edited the pictures. When she was done, she uploaded them on her i********: page and relaxed to scroll through her feed for a while. As far as she knew, Evan wasn’t in the office yet. And she would hear or see him when he entered. His office was a mere fifty steps away from hers. She had counted it while doing the tour with Edith.
Alice was watching a funny video when a notification popped up that someone had commented on her photo. She opened up the post so she could see the comment.
edy649: NICE OFFICE. STERLING, RIGHT? AT LEAST I KNOW WHERE TO FIND U NOW.
A shocked Alice sprang off the chair in a daze. Peering closely at her phone, she tapped on the profile of the poster. The page had no posts and no followers either. Who was edy649? Her mind instantly flashed back to Clinton’s call yesterday? Was this him? Was he using an annonymous account to stalk and threaten her now? She knew for a fact that Clinton was not on any social media platform except Telegram. He always claimed he did not know his way around it and wasn’t interested in learning because to him, it was a time waster. Was there another person trying to stalk her on behalf of Clinton? She couldn’t think of anybody at the time. She hadn’t burnt any bridges before she left Kings’ Group. Granted that most of her former colleagues didn’t like her one bit, but would they cheer on their boss to bully her online.
Her first instinct was to call Sheila, but she decided against that. She would insist Alice walked out of the office immediately and go to the station. She looked at the comment again and deleted it off the post so Sheila wouldn’t even see it when she came online. Her heart was still pounding inside her chest and she wanted so badly to step outside and fill her lungs with air. Rather than do that, she sat at her desk and bent her head to rest. It wasn’t long before she drifted off to sleep.
