Chapter 2: Smoke and Ashes

1296 Words
The world spun in a haze of smoke and ash. Blood, sticky and warm, clung to Selene’s skin, and the lingering scent of charred wood filled her nostrils, choking her as much as the fear that clung to her heart. Her guardian, Maeve, had told her to run. To leave. But where could she go? The last of the instructions Maeve had given her had been too vague, too cryptic, and now, with the old woman gone, the only thing Selene had was the pounding ache in her chest and a strange, dream-like pull that seemed to draw her forward. Her feet stumbled through the forest, the darkness enveloping her like a suffocating shroud. She couldn’t tell if it was the cold or the pain that made her shiver, maybe it was both. She could feel her heartbeat hammering in her ears, each thud a reminder of the danger closing in. The rogue pack that had attacked their cabin had left nothing but ruin behind. There were bodies scattered among the wreckage wolves, rogue and loyal alike. Maeve had shielded her from the worst of it, but in the end, she was still caught in the aftermath, still left to piece together what was left of her world. Her legs gave way beneath her, and she fell to her knees in the damp underbrush, the weight of exhaustion too much to bear. Blood soaked through her clothes, and the pain in her side was a constant, throbbing reminder of just how close to death she had come. But death hadn’t taken her, not yet. Selene closed her eyes for a moment, trying to steady her breath. She needed to move. She couldn’t stay here. Maeve’s last words echoed in her mind: “Bloodfang Territory. Find them. Don’t trust them, but find them.” The words were fading, but the pull she felt was unmistakable, like a thread tugging at her very soul, urging her toward something or someone she didn’t fully understand. It was instinct. It was fate. And in that moment, it was all she had left. The trees around her seemed to sway, the wind picking up, the storm swirling in the air. Her vision blurred, but a flash of silver in the distance caught her attention. She pushed herself up, her body screaming in protest, but she had no choice. She had to follow it. With each step, the world seemed to narrow. The blood in her veins was thick, like tar, and her head felt heavy as though it were full of cotton. She had to keep moving. She had to find them. Find him. The last remnants of Maeve’s teachings pulsed in her mind. Bloodfang. The name alone had always been a whisper, a rumor, a place of legend that even Maeve had always warned her to avoid. But now, with her guardian dead and her future uncertain, the only thing that mattered was survival. Selene’s pace quickened, the thudding of her heart louder than her labored breath. Every step she took seemed to bring her closer to something dark, something inevitable. The pull grew stronger, the heat of the bond surging deep in her chest. She felt the connection before she saw him. Felt it like a lightning strike, hot and searing, tingling along her skin. And then she saw him. In the clearing ahead, a figure stood tall, bathed in the light of the moon. A man, no, not just any man, he was the alpha. His presence filled the space around him, a palpable force that seemed to draw her in with a magnetism she couldn’t explain. He was unlike anyone she had ever seen. Dark hair framed a strong jaw, and his eyes were amber, glowing like gold and were locked onto hers the moment she entered the clearing. A jolt shot through her, sharp and instinctual. Her breath caught in her throat as her senses screamed at her to stop, to run, to turn and flee. But she couldn’t. Her body refused to obey. He was everything Maeve had warned her about. Powerful, commanding, dangerous. And yet, despite the terror that twisted her insides, she couldn’t tear her eyes away. The air between them crackled, charged with an intensity she couldn’t explain. Her pulse quickened, her breath shallow, and her feet moved forward without her consent, dragging her into the clearing. The forest around them was silent now, the storm having died down as though the world itself was holding its breath. "Who are you?" His voice was low, a growl more than a question, but it sent a shiver down her spine nonetheless. Her throat went dry, her mouth suddenly parched. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldn’t come. The bond between them was too strong. Too raw. "I’m... Selene," she whispered hoarsely, her voice barely audible. The moment her name passed her lips, a wave of heat surged through her, settling deep within her core. The bond snapped tighter, and she could feel him, his presence in her mind, his very essence pressing against hers. The alpha’s eyes narrowed, and he took a slow, deliberate step toward her, as if he were trying to gauge her reaction. “Selene,” he repeated, his voice an echo of a promise and a threat all at once. “You shouldn’t be here.” Her legs wobbled beneath her, her body screaming for rest, but her mind was too focused on the impossible pull she felt toward him. The dream-like pull, the destiny written in her blood. She couldn’t resist it not even if she wanted to. The wind rustled through the trees again, and Selene swayed, barely able to keep herself standing. Her head spun, the world around her fading in and out of focus. She could feel his eyes on her, heavy and intense, but there was no comfort in his gaze, only something primal. His voice broke through the haze. “You’re injured. Why come to me? You could’ve gone anywhere else.” The words stung, but she didn’t have the energy to react. She could only watch him, unable to tear her eyes away from the man who stood before her like some dark, forbidden dream. "I have nowhere else to go," Selene murmured, her voice barely a whisper. His lips curled slightly, a hint of something darker flashing in his eyes. "You’ve come to the wrong place, little omega." The words should’ve struck fear into her heart, but instead, they did something dangerous. They fueled the heat pooling in her core, the bond that tied her to him, tightening, overwhelming. “I don’t want you here,” he added coldly, his tone low, and yet there was something in his voice, a flicker of something she couldn’t quite place. He seemed to struggle with his words, as if something inside him fought against the pull as much as she did. “But I don’t have a choice now, do I?” Selene’s pulse thudded in her ears, a desperate beat, the weight of what she had just walked into crashing down on her. She had come to the Bloodfang Territory as Maeve had instructed, but she hadn’t expected this. She hadn’t expected the pull. She hadn’t expected him. “I don’t want to be here either,” Selene whispered, her breath coming in shallow gasps. “But I don’t know where else to go.” The alpha’s gaze softened for a fleeting second, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. “You’ll learn soon enough,” he muttered, his tone grim. “This place doesn’t offer shelter. It offers something far worse.” The storm had passed, but the storm inside her was only just beginning.
