Nadia didn't sleep.
She couldn't.
The single word whispered by her reflection echoed in her mind.
Run.
She had heard it clearly.
Not imagined it.
Not dreamed it.
The voice had been soft—almost gentle—but filled with urgency.
She stayed awake until sunrise, every light in the apartment switched on. Every mirror was covered with towels, blankets, or jackets. Even the small decorative mirror in her living room had been turned to face the wall.
Only then did she feel slightly safer.
Or so she thought.
At exactly 8:17 a.m., someone knocked on her door.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Nadia froze.
The pattern.
It was the same one she had heard outside Apartment 305.
She walked quietly toward the door without making a sound.
Looking through the peephole, she saw Detective Idris Bello standing alone.
He wasn't smiling.
She opened the door cautiously.
"Detective."
"Miss Adebayo."
His eyes swept over her apartment.
Every mirror was covered.
"You've been redecorating?" he asked.
Nadia gave a nervous laugh.
"I just... don't like mirrors today."
Idris didn't comment.
"May I come in?"
She hesitated before stepping aside.
He remained standing as he looked around the apartment.
"I won't take much of your time."
Nadia folded her arms.
"Have you found out what happened to Olivia?"
"We're still investigating."
There was a pause.
Then Idris looked directly at her.
"I need you to tell me everything you left out yesterday."
Her stomach tightened.
"I told you everything."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"You stopped yourself several times."
"You looked frightened every time I asked what happened inside the bedroom."
"I've interviewed hundreds of witnesses."
"I know when someone is protecting information."
Nadia looked away.
"If I tell you..."
"You won't believe me."
"Try me."
Silence stretched between them.
Finally, she spoke.
"I saw Olivia inside a mirror."
Idris's expression didn't change.
"Go on."
"She was trapped."
"There was someone behind her."
"A shadow."
"It reached for her..."
"And then the mirror shattered."
She waited for him to laugh.
He didn't.
Instead, he asked quietly,
"What did the shadow look like?"
"I couldn't see its face."
"Anything else?"
"It felt..."
She searched for the right word.
"Wrong."
Idris nodded once.
"I thought you'd say that."
Nadia stared at him.
"You believe me?"
"No."
"But you're not the first person to describe something like that."
He reached into his briefcase and placed a thin folder on the table.
Across the front were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Crime scenes.
Every victim had died under mysterious circumstances.
Every photograph contained one thing in common.
A mirror.
Nadia flipped through them slowly.
Some mirrors were cracked.
Some untouched.
Some hanging on walls.
Others lying on the floor.
Each crime scene looked ordinary...
Until she noticed the reflections.
"They're wrong," she whispered.
Idris nodded.
"In every case."
She looked closer.
In one photograph, a victim's reflection was facing the wrong direction.
In another, a reflection had no face.
Another showed an empty room...
Except the mirror reflected someone standing behind the photographer.
Nadia's hands began to shake.
"What is this?"
"I don't know."
"But these deaths go back eighteen years."
"Eighteen?"
"Different cities."
"Different victims."
"No connection."
He leaned forward.
"Until yesterday."
"You."
Before Nadia could respond, Idris's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"What?"
His expression darkened.
"When?"
He listened for another moment.
"We're on our way."
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
"There has been another death."
Nadia felt the air leave her lungs.
"Where?"
"A hotel downtown."
He looked at her.
"The victim reported seeing someone inside mirrors just two days ago."
Less than thirty minutes later, they arrived at the luxury hotel.
Police tape surrounded the lobby.
Guests whispered nervously.
Reporters had already begun gathering outside.
A hotel manager hurried toward Idris.
"Detective."
"What have we got?"
"The victim was found in Room 714."
"No signs of forced entry."
"The only unusual thing..."
He hesitated.
"The mirrors."
The hotel room felt unnaturally cold.
A young man's body lay near the bed.
His eyes were wide open.
Frozen in terror.
The large mirror opposite the bed had been completely shattered.
Thousands of tiny fragments covered the carpet.
One forensic officer approached Idris.
"Cause of death isn't obvious."
"No injuries."
"No poison."
"No struggle."
Nadia remained near the doorway.
Something about the room made her uneasy.
Then she noticed it.
One piece of broken glass.
Unlike the others...
It still reflected the room perfectly.
She bent down.
In the reflection...
The victim was standing.
Alive.
He looked directly at her.
His lips moved silently.
She couldn't hear him.
He pointed toward the bathroom.
Then the reflection vanished.
The glass now reflected only the empty room.
"Nadia?"
Idris's voice pulled her back.
"What is it?"
She looked toward the bathroom.
"I think..."
"There's something in there."
Idris carefully pushed open the bathroom door.
Nothing.
Empty.
Except for one thing.
Words written across the fogged mirror.
Not with ink.
Not with blood.
As though someone had written them with a fingertip.
YOU SEE US NOW.
The room fell silent.
One officer whispered,
"Who wrote that?"
The forensic team confirmed no one had entered the bathroom since they arrived.
Yet the message hadn't been there five minutes earlier.
Nadia slowly stepped closer.
As she stared at the words...
New letters began appearing.
One by one.
Invisible fingers traced them across the glass.
Everyone watched in stunned silence.
DON'T LET HER FIND THE TRUTH.
The final letter appeared.
Then the writing slowly faded.
As though it had never existed.
No one spoke.
Even Detective Idris, who had spent years solving impossible cases, looked shaken.
For the first time, he couldn't explain what he had just witnessed.
As the officers secured the room, Nadia glanced into the bathroom mirror one last time.
Everyone else's reflection looked exactly as it should.
Except hers.
Her reflection wasn't looking at the mirror.
It was looking past her.
At something standing behind her.
Nadia turned around instantly.
The bathroom was empty.
When she looked back at the mirror...
The reflection smiled sadly.
Then it whispered without making a sound.
"He's already inside."
