The morning after felt like a dream.
Sunlight spilled across the rumpled sheets, painting Adrian’s face in soft gold. His arm was draped over her waist, his breathing steady, peaceful as if for once in his life, he wasn’t carrying the weight of an empire.
Elena traced the curve of his jaw, her heart aching with a tenderness she could no longer deny. He had broken through every wall she built, and now she was his completely, irrevocably.
But reality had sharp teeth.
By the time Adrian left for the office, the headlines were already brutal.
“Blackthorn Heir Spotted with Mistress in Seedy Motel.”
“CEO Spirals Further Amid Scandal.”
“Shareholders Demand Resignation Vote.”
Elena stood frozen in front of the television, her heart sinking. They had followed her. Followed them.
The innkeeper’s staff must have tipped someone off. The photographs splashed across every screen grainy but damning. Adrian carrying her inside. His arm around her waist. Her face turned up toward his in the storm.
They didn’t see love.
They saw weakness. Scandal. Proof of every lie the board had spread.
When Adrian returned that night, fury radiated from him like heat. He slammed his phone onto the table, running a hand through his hair.
“They called an emergency vote,” he said flatly. “Tomorrow. They want me out.”
Elena’s stomach twisted. “Because of me.”
“Because they’re cowards,” he snapped, pacing the length of the room. His tie was undone, his eyes bloodshot, but his voice burned with determination. “They think they can scare me into choosing between you and the company. They don’t understand—I don’t negotiate where you’re concerned.”
Her chest tightened. “Adrian"
“No.” He stopped in front of her, gripping her shoulders, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Don’t you dare say you’ll leave again. I won’t survive it, Elena. I meant every word. You are the only thing I won’t sacrifice.”
Her throat ached, torn between love and guilt.
Because even as his words set her soul on fire, she couldn’t ignore the truth: she was costing him everyt
hing.
And tomorrow, he could lose it all.
