THE BETRAYAL

461 Words
The boardroom emptied slowly, the air heavy with shock. Adrian remained seated at the head of the table, calm on the surface, but Elena watching from the shadows could see the truth. His hands clenched the chair arms, his jaw locked in steel. He had won, but barely. When she finally stepped out, their eyes met. For a moment, everything else fell away. He crossed to her in two strides, his hand cupping her cheek. “You shouldn’t have been here,” he murmured, voice rough. “I had to be,” she whispered back. For a fleeting second, it was just them. Until the door opened again. Marcus, Adrian’s most trusted advisor, entered, his face pale. He hesitated, then handed Adrian a slim file. “We found the leak,” he said quietly. Adrian took it, his gaze scanning the pages. His expression shifted—stone hard, then lethal. Elena’s heart raced. “What is it?” Adrian didn’t answer at first. His knuckles whitened around the file. Finally, he looked up, his eyes like ice. “It wasn’t the press. It wasn’t a stranger. It was someone inside.” Her pulse thudded. “Inside…?” Marcus nodded grimly. “Your stepmother, Elena. She sold the photographs.” The world tilted. Her stepmother. The woman who raised her after her father’s death. The one who smiled sweetly at her wedding, who called her “dear girl,” who pretended to want her happiness. Elena staggered back, bile rising in her throat. “No. No, she wouldn’t—” But Adrian’s hand tightened on her arm, grounding her. “She did.” His voice was dark, merciless. “And she’ll pay for it.” Elena shook her head, torn between rage and heartbreak. “Why? Why would she do this to me?” Marcus’s answer was quiet, but it cut like a blade. “Money. And revenge. She never forgave your father for leaving her less than he left you. This was her way of taking it back.” Elena’s chest ached as the betrayal crashed down on her. Not a stranger. Not an enemy. Family. Tears blurred her vision, but Adrian tilted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. His voice softened—not for the world, not for the board, but for her. “She doesn’t win. Do you hear me? Not now. Not ever.” Elena’s lips trembled. “Adrian…” His thumb brushed away her tears. “You’re mine. And no betrayal will take you from me.” In his eyes, she saw the vow. Not just protection, not just possession, but a love so unyielding it would burn down anyone who dared to threaten it. And for the first time, she let herself believe it.
