Enemies Meet Again

Informed Media Center was a top-tier group in Country S and had established a studio in A City, making it one of the most prestigious news agencies in the city. Known for its first-hand information and breaking news, it was the hub of the most influential stories. Staring at the entrance, Chloe sighed deeply before stepping inside. “Excuse me, where can I find Editor-in-Chief Anna?” In the vast office, no one responded to her. Um… This is awkward. “Excuse me, where can I find Editor-in-Chief Anna?” Chloe repeated, raising her voice slightly. “You must be Chloe,” a voice behind her said, startling Chloe. She turned to see a woman in her thirties scrutinizing her. “Yes, I’m Chloe.” “Anna,” the woman introduced herself curtly, a flicker of disdain in her eyes. Chloe had a strong feeling this woman would be tough to deal with. “Editor-in-Chief Anna, hello, I’m here to report in.” Despite feeling annoyed by Anna’s attitude, Chloe maintained her graceful smile. “Hmm,” Anna clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention. All heads turned toward them. “Let me introduce our new colleague, Chloe, who has been transferred from Country S.” “I’m Chloe Taylor. I look forward to working with all of you,” Chloe said politely, ensuring she didn’t miss any formalities. “So, this is Chloe? I heard she was unwanted by the headquarters in Country S, so they sent her back.” “Her skills are mediocre. Five years without any significant achievements.” “Wow, the headquarters really dumped their trash on us.” “I heard her reputation isn’t great either. She’s supposedly flirted with several company executives, causing their wives to complain.” “Even after using her charms, she couldn’t get ahead and was sent back. How embarrassing.” The whispers reached Chloe’s ears, but she remained unflustered. She had encountered many prejudiced people and was used to being judged unfairly. “Sister!” The shocked exclamation silenced the office instantly. Chloe turned to see Mia, equally surprised. She hadn’t expected to run into Mia at Informed Media Center. It truly was a case of enemies meeting again. “Mia, did you just call her sister?” Anna looked bewildered. “Yes, Anna. Chloe is my biological sister. She went abroad five years ago, and I didn’t expect the person being transferred back to be her,” Mia said, feigning happiness. Seeing Mia’s fake pleasant demeanor made Chloe feel sick. This pretentious little white lotus was always acting. “Sister, didn’t you go to Country W? Why are you coming from the headquarters in Country S?” Mia asked with faux curiosity. “It’s a long story,” Chloe replied, not wanting to elaborate. Mia smiled awkwardly and then put on a good-sister act. “Sister, you never contacted us all these years. Do you know how worried Mom, Dad, and I were about you?” Worried? Ha! That was the funniest joke Chloe had heard in five years. “What a contrast. One sister becomes a Deputy Editor, and the other is still a lowly paparazzo. How disgraceful.” “Yeah, I wonder how Deputy Editor Taylor feels about having such a sister.” Chloe was a bit surprised to learn that Mia had become a Deputy Editor. “Mia, since Chloe is your sister, she’ll be in your team. Show her around and give her some suitable tasks to start with.” “Sure!” Chloe sighed internally. Why did they have to be in the same team? “Come on, sis,” Mia said brightly. Chloe felt like rolling her eyes but followed along. “I’m really happy we get to work together, sister,” Mia said, beaming. Chloe resisted the urge to give her a huge eye-roll. “Sis, this will be your desk. Do you like it?” Mia pointed to a simple desk in the farthest corner of the room, reminiscent of how the worst students in school were relegated to the back row to fend for themselves. However, Chloe doubted Mia would leave her to fend for herself so easily. Seeing Chloe’s thoughts, Mia added apologetically, “I’m sorry, sister. This is the only available desk right now.” “It’s fine!” Chloe said, pretending not to care. “Sis, there aren’t many big cases right now. How about you start with following up on Garcia Group’s CEO, Jacob?” Mia suggested, her tone seemingly considerate. Chloe: “…” Jacob? She had to follow Jacob? She could almost hear the sound of her neck snapping. “Deputy Editor Taylor, isn’t that too big of a case for her?” “Yeah, Deputy Editor Taylor, you’re playing favorites.” Mia smiled. “There will be other big cases for you all too.” Chloe wished she could splash a can of soda in their faces. Favorites? A big case? It was indeed a big case, one that probably no one could handle. Mia assigning it to her meant she could later accuse Chloe of incompetence if she failed. How thoughtful. “Sis, don’t worry. Tracking Jacob isn’t easy, take your time,” Mia added, pretending to be supportive. It seemed Mia was playing the role of the good sister. “Sis, why don’t you come home for dinner tonight? Mom and Dad would be so happy to see you back.” “I doubt anyone would be happy,” Chloe said with a cold smile. Mia lowered her eyes. “Sister, are you still angry about what happened five years ago? Dad had his reasons.” “Have you married Mark yet?” Chloe suddenly asked, changing the topic. “Huh?” Mia was taken aback. “Sister, how did you know?” “There were news reports. I saw it by chance,” Chloe replied calmly. “Sister, are you mad at me? Mark has been so good to me. I know about you and him... but I couldn’t control my feelings.” Chloe looked at Mia’s pitiful face and felt an overwhelming urge to slap her. “Don’t worry about it. Mark and I broke up a long time ago. I wish you both happiness.” A w***e and a dog, a match made in heaven. How could she not wish them well? “Sis, are you still mad at Mark? He was just angry back then.” “I’m not mad. Why should I be?” Chloe said indifferently. Getting mad at scum would only make people think she was scum too. “Sis, why don’t I invite Mark to join us for dinner tonight?” Mia said, holding Chloe’s arm affectionately. Chloe was about to refuse, but Mia’s eyes turned innocent again. “If you don’t agree, it means you’re still angry with us, right?” “Fine, I’ll go.” Chloe was defeated by this pretentious act. She quickly sent Harper a text: “Please look after Lucy for me. I might be late tonight.”
