Chapter 3

A chill ran through my body, and I gritted my teeth. Back then, my grandfather had gone to Norhaven to work to support the family. After a flood in our hometown, my grandmother moved with my father, and they never heard from him again. Everyone said he had changed, but my grandmother claimed she didn't believe it. Yet I often saw her crying alone under the moonlight. After my parents died in a car accident, my grandmother was my only family. I couldn't let anything happen to her. At the same time, the nursing home called. I answered with trembling hands. The voice on the other end said, "Ms. Prescott, someone just called the old lady from overseas. She listened for a moment and then clutched her chest, struggling to breathe..." I screamed into the phone, tears falling instantly, "Don't show her the phone! Don't answer any calls!" After hanging up, I stared at Isla with red eyes and said, "You're despicable! Back then, your father didn't want you to go to college. My grandmother used her savings to pay your tuition for four years! And this is how you repay her?!" Isla shrugged indifferently and replied, "So what? She did it willingly! Did I force her? After she dies, I'll just light a candle for her to pay her back." I yelled, "You animal!" and raised my hand to slap her mouth. Before I could bring it down, a loud slap rang out as Isla suddenly struck herself hard across the face. The next second, Ezra rushed over and shoved me aside, demanding, "Isla! Are you okay?" Seeing her reddened cheek, he looked ready to tear me apart. Isla sobbed and fell into his arms, saying, "Ezra... I was trying to help her buy a plane ticket... but she hit me... and said she'd ruin us both..." Ezra exploded with rage, shouting, "Maren!!! You asked for it! Don't blame me for forgetting our past!" He pulled out a walkie-talkie and called for men. Two burly guards charged over. He ordered, "Throw her in the van! Dump her in the slums!" I struggled and cried out, "Ezra, let me go! You'll regret this!" They covered my mouth and tossed me into a van. The car sped off and soon stopped on a dirty, chaotic street. The door slid open, and I was kicked out, landing hard in a pile of trash. As the van roared away, I realized this was a notorious lawless zone. Several drunk homeless men whistled and approached me, speaking lewd English. I screamed, "Get away! Don't come near me!" Dozens of dirty hands grabbed my ankles. I screamed and shouted until my voice gave out. Half an hour later, a sedan stopped in front of me. The window rolled down. Isla waved her phone, showing a video of my humiliating scene just now. She said with a sneer, "Tsk, these guys really don't know how to treat a lady properly. I wonder if our grandma can survive tonight after seeing this... Let me ask you one more time. Are you leaving or not?" I bit my lip hard and spoke through humiliation, "I'll leave." Isla nodded with satisfaction. She ordered two burly men to escort me to the airport. Numbly, I boarded the plane. My phone buzzed twice. A text from Isla appeared. Isla: I forgot to tell you, I don't love Ezra at all! I just envy you, plain and simple. I want to take everything from you and watch you suffer like a fool. That makes me ecstatic! Isla: And one more secret. Three years ago, I called Grandma and played a little prank. She really thought you had taken out a loan with explicit photos in college, and she had a stroke on the spot. Blood rushed to my head. I shook with rage. So that was why Grandma had that stroke and became paralyzed. It was Isla! I had treated her as a best friend, and she stole my fiancé, harmed my grandmother, and ruined my reputation. I typed back furiously. Maren: Why? Why did you do this? I didn't get a reply. Instead, the nursing home called frantically. The panicked voice said, "Ms. Prescott! I just checked on the old lady. She secretly watched a video on her phone and started spitting blood! We've rushed her to the ER!" I let out a piercing scream, "Grandma!!!" If they wouldn't let Grandma live, then nobody would! I frantically unbuckled my seatbelt and stumbled off the plane. Hailing a taxi, I sent a message to Nathan Riley, the CEO of my agency. Maren: Help me, please! I'm begging you.
