We arrived at the Italian restaurant a little before seven I’d been teaching her how to book appointments and use our executive IT platform. It had been a long day, but she’d learnt a lot and she’d have my help over the next week, she’d get used to it and be doing it on her own soon.
We sat down and ordered wine and the meat ball special. ‘May I ask you something?’
‘Sure ask away.’
She looked at me. ‘Does Cal know about the contract?’
‘No and I rather he didn’t, so can we please keep it between us.’
‘Sure,’
I exhaled . ‘So Lexi tell me a little about yourself.’
‘What would you like to know?’
‘Everything, but let’s start with you.’
‘I have a brother and sister both older..’
‘Cal said you left home may I ask why.’
‘It just got to much they treated me like a two year old. They were overprotective and over bearing I couldn’t take it anymore so I ran away.’
‘So you went to your friends right?’
‘Yeah Amilia. She was great and respected me enough not to judge me or my dessision.’
‘So did they know you were there?’
‘Yes, and they didn’t care.’
‘I see.’
‘My life’s not perfect Corey far from it.’
‘Neither is mine, but still.’
‘They made me resent them Corey. I had no choice but to prove them wrong, prove I wasn’t their little girl anymore.‘
‘I understand.’ I looked at her She seemed so lost. ‘So tell me a little about your children.’
‘Are you sure that you want to hear about them?’
‘I do.’
The meal was placed on the table we both said thanks getting back to the conversation. ‘I have six kids all together. My eldest Hunter, he lives with his girlfriend. The twins are at uni. Arron and a Kieran are in highschool and Izzy is almost two.’
I smiled. ‘And their father?’
She swallowed I then knew this was going to be a difficult subject.
‘I’d rather not talk about him over dinner I don’t wish to ruin it.’
‘So let me come back with you and we can finish our conversation there.’
‘Are you asking for a coffee or a night cap?’
‘Both.’
She smiled. ‘Mr. Jacobs that’s not a good idea.’
‘Just a coffee so we can talk a little more.’
‘Okay.’
I smiled as we ate.
Once I paid the bill we walked out the restaurant and got in my car driving back to the cottage. She didn’t look as nervous as she did when we walked into the restaurant earlier that evening.
I pulled up outside the cottage and we both got out the car she opened the door and we stepped in. Lola looked at me and smiled. ‘How was your evening?’
‘Good Lola really good.’
She smiled. ’I put Izzy to bed she’s fast. Arron and Kieron are in their rooms after an argument on the PlayStation.’
She laughed. ‘Nothing new there.’
‘I best be heading off.’
‘Thanks Lola.’
‘No problem Miss. Evans. Any time you need me just call.’
‘I will.’
She looked at me. ‘Good night Mr. Jacobs.’
‘You to Lola and thanks for taking care of them.’
‘Anytime bye.’
She closed the door behind them.
‘I’ll do us that coffee .’
I smiled sitting on the sofa as she went into the kitchen.
She walked back in with two coffees. Placing them down sitting next to me.
I looked at her, she was nervous again. I could tell she didn’t like talking about her past, but she needed the release so she could look forward to her future. ‘So tell me a little about their father and how you met.’
‘I met him through Amilia.’
‘The friend you lived with?’
‘Yes he was a friend of her boyfriend he introduced me to him and the rest of his friends when I was eighteen.’
I nodded.
‘It wasn’t the best part of my life Corey I done some pretty dumb things.’
‘We all do.’ I admitted.
‘Amilia tried to warn me away from him and I chose not to listen.’
‘So he broke your heart.’
‘Sort of we weren’t exactly a couple we just hung and had s*x. He and Amilia had an argument and I never saw him after that I felt like he blammed me for it. She never liked him.’
‘So what happened exactly for you to end up with him?’
‘It’s a long story.’
‘I’ve got all the time in the world.’
‘Just say I was dumb and I got caught. When he found out Hunter was his he done the decient thing and stood by me helped me to get a place where both of us would live and bring up Hunter.’
‘I gather it didn’t stop there.’
‘No.’
‘So why did you move here Lex?’
‘To get away from him. He was controlling me, suffocating me. He didn’t love me just what I gave him it was pure hell.’
‘So why did you leave it so long?’
‘Cause he wouldn’t leave. He didn’t think I was capable of taking care of our children with out him. I tried so many times Corey he wouldn’t have it. So I made the decision to leave him.’
‘Would you ever go back to him?’
‘No never.’
I smiled and placed my arm around her. She lay in my chest. ‘I know you don’t want to talk about him but you need to be free from his burden to begin a fresh.’
‘I know.’
‘I’m here when you’re ready to talk about it.’
‘I am.’
‘I don’t think you are.’
‘But not tonight.’ She yawned
I smiled. ‘Lye down Lex.’
‘But haven’t you got to go home?’
‘I’ll leave once you are asleep okay.’
‘Okay.’
She lay across me, my finger stroked her face as she slowly closed her eyes.
