Lori’s POV
“Time to go, Lori,” She announced.
“I’m ready,” I said, picking up my clutch. I was wearing a silver dinner dress on silver heels.
“Wow, that was fast, you sure are good with working under pressure,” She said. I knew it wasn’t a compliment and I didn’t take it as one. Just did not respond.
“Shall we?” I asked reaching the door of my room where she was standing.
She nodded and led the way as I closed the door behind me.
We walked out of the house to where the car that Jack had sent to pick her up was packed.
“Have fun at the party, my darling,” My stepmother called after Olivia.
“I will mummy, see you tomorrow,” Olivia responded.
‘Tomorrow?’ I wondered. I knew the party was to start by 8 pm, but wasn’t aware it was an all-night party, I didn’t plan to stay up all night partying, I planned to have a sound night's rest on my bed since it was Friday and I have had a long week at work.
But I didn’t think too much about it as it was her boyfriend’s birthday anyway, she could decide to sleep over, but not me.
We arrived at Jack’s mansion. The compound was already full of cars and the guests were already in. In her red full gown and black heels, Olivia stepped down from the car with so much carriage that you would believe she was the celebrant of the day and I was her assistant who was there to ensure her clothes didn’t get rumbled.
She walked into the mansion straight to where Jack stood, while I tried hiding away from the spotlight and stares that fell on her. She greeted Jack as he planted a peck on her cheek and placed his arm around her like she was his shining trophy.
From afar, I watched how she greeted those he had been standing with before our arrival and how she softly took him away from the crowd. I could only wish I had half of her confidence and could exhibit it where Beck was.
“Hey Lori,” I heard my name and turned around to see four of my colleagues standing around a high table with glasses of wine in their hands.
“Hey guys,” I said, walking up to them.
“You look beautiful,” Frank said.
“Thank you, you don’t look bad yourself,” I responded. He was wearing a grey suit and looked handsome in the outfit.
“You sure do look good,” Mabel added.
“Thanks, Mabel, I can say the same of you,” I said with a smile as I looked her over on her purple two-piece flare gown that accentuated her shape and brought out her pale skin colour.
“Thank you,” She said with a smile.
The other persons at the table were Alfred who was wearing an ash-coloured suit and Yvonne who wore a black mini gown.
“Didn’t think you would come,” Alfred said.
“None of us thought you would,” Mabel added.
“Why?” I asked, shocked by their assumptions.
“You did not say you would, even when we discussed it earlier at work,” Yvonne said.
“Moreover, you’ve never really attended any of the office private parties in the past except the ones organized by the company,” Frank added.
“Well, it just happened,” I said.
“What changed?” Alfred asked.
“Nothing really, my sister just insisted I be here,” I said.
“Your sister? Who is your sister? Is she here?” Mabel asked looking around. I had almost forgotten that no one in the office actually knew Olivia was my sister, moreover, she was not working at my company.
“I didn’t even know you have a sister,” Frank said.
I turned around and pointed at Olivia where she was underneath Jack’s arm. “That’s her,” I said.
“You mean the boss’ girlfriend is your sister?” Yvonne asked with bewildered eyes.
“Well, typically my stepsister not biologically sister,” I said.
“Doh oo, does it matter?” Mabel asked.
“It sure doesn’t, I wish it was me who was up there with the boss,” Yvonne said dreamily.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“What don’t I mean? I mean being the boss’ girlfriend would be so nice,” She said.
“It would be a dream come true,” Mabel added smiling sheepishly as she watched Jack say something in Olivia’s ears as she giggled.
I turned my face away as the thought of my mischievous stepsister acting so loving made me cringe.
“And your sister is so pretty, not that you are not but she is eye-catching,” Frank said.
Well, it wasn’t the first time I was getting a comment like that so it did not disturb me. I knew that Olivia looked prettier because of how she carried herself. She dressed, walked, spoke and acted like a billionaire’s daughter and no one who sees her for the first time doesn’t get to believe that she is.
“If she wasn’t his, I would have loved to have her as mine,” Frank said and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Why are you laughing?” He asked.
“Sorry, but I don’t think you will have a chance with her even if she wasn’t with him,” I said as a matter of fact.
“You think I am not good enough for her?” He asked.
“You want me to be sincere?” I asked, knowing my words would hurt his pride.
“Yes, tell me,” He said.
“How do I put this now, well, you are a nice guy with good earnings but you see that girl over there,” I said pointing at Olivia.
“You are not on the same level. You won’t be able to sponsor half of her lifestyle with your earnings,” I said.
Olivia was expensive to maintain and I knew the exact kind of guys she went out with. They had to be the owners of their companies or a billionaire’s son.
“I see,” He said, still looking at her.
“They are coming this way,” Alfred said lowering his voice and eyes.
“Who?” I asked, turning around, hoping to see a group of other colleagues, maybe even Alfred’s crush as his bowing of head made it seem he had seen someone who he is shy in front of.
I saw Jack and Olivia walking up to us. ‘Oh no,’ I thought.
“Hello,” Jack said.
“Happy birthday boos,” We all chorused as if we had planned it.
“Thank you and thank you for making it to my party,” He said.
“You are welcome sir,” Mabel said on our behalf.
“I hope you have fun,” He said and they all lifted their glasses while I stared absent-mindedly.
He looked at me in less than a second, like I disgusted him or something. Well, maybe Olivia had said some pretty bad things about me to him, but I couldn’t care more.
“Olivia said you caused her delayed arrival,” He said facing me.
Just then my phone rang, it was Beck who was calling.
“Excuse me, I have to take this,” I said turning to leave, glad that the call had come at the right time.
I walked to the bathroom to receive the call.
“Hello,” I said on picking up the call.
“Hello love,” He said and added “Where are you? It sounds noisy,”
“At my boss’ birthday party,” I said remembering that I had forgotten to tell him about it.
“I didn’t think you would be attending,”
“Well, Olivia and stepmother made it impossible not to,” I said.
“Staying all night out?” He asked.
“I hope not, I really want to be on my bed right now, away from all these,” I said and he giggled.
“I can tell, well, since you are already there, why not have a nice time,” He said.
“I will try,”
“Byee,” He said and ended the call.
‘Hmm, well, I guess we can unwind here,’ I said to myself.
Taking a deep breath I walked out of the bathroom, only to stumble upon Olivia.
“Just the person I was searching for, have a drink with me,” She said taking me by the hand and dragging me into the party without waiting for me to object.
