Reflection

The training grounds stretched out before Serena, a wide, open clearing framed by the towering trees of the forest. The air was crisp with the approaching night, and the sky above had begun its slow transformation from the warm hues of twilight to the deeper, shadowed tones of early evening. Overhead, the moon hung low on the horizon, gradually rising into prominence. It was still veiled by the last traces of daylight, but its soft, ethereal glow had already begun to cast a pale light over the area, illuminating the clearing in an otherworldly silver sheen. There was something different about the air tonight, Serena realized as she stood in the center of the clearing, her eyes scanning the sky. It wasn’t just the cool breeze rustling through the trees or the distant, melodic calls of the forest’s nocturnal creatures—it was something deeper, more primal. A charge, faint but undeniable, thrummed beneath the surface of the earth, as if the ground itself was holding its breath, waiting. She flexed her fingers, feeling the weight of that anticipation settle over her like a second skin. Her body felt alive, the heightened awareness she’d begun to associate with the moon’s rise buzzing just beneath her skin. Though she couldn’t place it, there was an edge to the night that made her restless, a sensation that something was coming—something she wasn’t entirely prepared for. Across the clearing, Calder was moving with his usual controlled grace, his expression calm but focused as he prepared for their session. He hadn’t said much when they arrived, but there was an intensity in his eyes, a silent understanding that tonight’s training wasn’t going to be like the others. Calder had always been patient with her, pushing but never too hard, guiding her without ever forcing her to accept more than she was ready for. But tonight, the stakes felt different. There was an urgency in the air, as if time was running out, as if tonight was meant to be a turning point. Serena tore her gaze from the moon and focused on the training grounds, taking in the familiar surroundings that had become both a challenge and a sanctuary for her. The forest loomed at the edges of the clearing, dark and impenetrable, its shadows deepening as the light faded. The scent of pine and damp earth filled the air, grounding her, but even that familiar scent couldn’t dispel the tension simmering just beneath her skin. She stretched her arms, rolling her shoulders to release the tension that had been building since they arrived. The forest, once a place of solitude for her, now felt like it was watching, waiting—like everything was on the verge of something greater. What is it about tonight? she wondered, her mind racing. There was nothing visibly different, and yet, the energy in the air was palpable. Her instincts, honed by her time training with Calder and the pack, told her that something was coming. She just didn’t know what. Calder’s voice, low and steady, broke through her thoughts. “Ready?” Serena turned to face him, nodding despite the lingering unease in her chest. “Yeah,” she said, her voice a little sharper than she intended, betraying the tension she was feeling. He studied her for a moment, his sharp gaze seeming to see more than she was willing to show. “Good,” he said, though there was a flicker of something in his eyes—something almost like concern. He gestured toward the center of the clearing, signaling for her to take her position. As she stepped forward, her boots pressing into the soft earth, Serena couldn’t shake the feeling that tonight would be different. The usual rhythm of their training sessions felt off-kilter, the familiar patterns disrupted by the energy pulsing around them. She could sense it, in the way the leaves on the trees seemed to tremble, in the way the moonlight spilled across the ground, casting everything in a ghostly glow. There was a weight to the air, a heavy, expectant stillness that made her feel like she was standing on the edge of something unknown. Why does it feel like everything’s changing? Serena thought, her muscles already tightening with the anticipation of whatever was coming. Calder’s eyes followed her movements as she positioned herself, his expression unreadable but his body language alert, as if he too was bracing for something beyond their usual training. The rising moon seemed to pull at her, its glow sinking into her skin and stirring something deep within her core. It wasn’t painful, not exactly, but it was a sensation she couldn’t ignore—a tug, gentle but insistent, like a hand reaching out, beckoning her to follow. Serena took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment as she tried to steady herself. She had felt this before, this pull of the moon, but tonight it was stronger. More demanding. As if the moon itself was calling to her, waiting for her to answer. It was unsettling, yet there was a strange comfort in it, a familiarity she couldn’t quite place. When she opened her eyes, Calder was watching her carefully, his stance relaxed but poised for action. “Let’s see what you’ve got tonight,” he said, his voice calm but edged with challenge. Serena nodded, the tension in her body easing slightly as she focused on the task at hand. Despite the strange energy in the air, despite the pull of the moon, this was still training. She knew how to fight, how to push herself past her limits. Calder had seen to that. And yet, a part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that tonight would be unlike anything they’d done before. As she shifted her weight, preparing for the first strike, she caught one last glimpse of the moon, now fully risen, its silver light spilling across the clearing like liquid. It glowed brighter than ever, casting long shadows and illuminating every detail of the forest around them. The charge in the air intensified, and for a brief second, Serena swore she could feel the moon’s energy seeping into her bones, stirring something she had yet to fully understand. Something’s coming, she thought, her heart pounding. But what?
