Rival Pack

Her heart pounded, adrenaline surging through her veins as she fought back with everything she had. She was fast, and her instincts guided her, but she was outnumbered. For every blow she landed, they hit back harder, their strength overwhelming her. She gritted her teeth, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she dodged and struck, refusing to go down without a fight. But the truth was clear—she couldn’t win this alone. I can’t let them take me. I won’t be dragged into their world… I won’t! But even as the thought crossed her mind, one of them caught her by the arm, his claws digging into her skin as he yanked her toward him. Pain shot through her, but she didn’t cry out, instead lashing out with her free hand, her claws slicing across his face. He roared in fury, but before he could retaliate, a low, menacing growl filled the air. Serena’s heart skipped a beat. The man holding her stiffened, his eyes widening as he released her and took a step back. Out of the shadows, moving with a deadly grace, came Calder. He was in full wolf form, a massive, hulking figure that dwarfed the others. His fur was dark, his eyes blazing with fury as he stepped between Serena and her attackers, his lips curled back in a vicious snarl that bared his teeth. For a moment, everything was still. The air crackled with tension as Calder’s presence filled the clearing, his dominance radiating from him in waves. The pack members faltered, uncertainty flickering in their eyes as they glanced between each other. They weren’t expecting this. They hadn’t come prepared to face someone like Calder. Serena’s breath came in shallow gasps as she watched him, her pulse racing for an entirely different reason now. Relief flooded through her, but it was quickly followed by frustration. I didn’t need saving. Or at least, she didn’t want to need it. Calder growled, a deep, rumbling sound that sent a shiver down Serena’s spine. He didn’t give the rival pack a chance to recover. In a blur of motion, he lunged at the nearest wolf, his teeth sinking into the man’s shoulder with brutal precision. The fight was swift and brutal. Calder moved with lethal efficiency, tearing through the wolves with a fury that left no room for doubt about his strength. The sound of snarls, growls, and the tearing of flesh filled the air as Calder dismantled Ronan’s pack one by one. Serena stood frozen, her breath shallow as she watched, torn between awe and resentment. Calder’s power was undeniable, but she hated that she had been forced into this situation—forced to rely on someone else. Within moments, the fight was over. The remaining wolves, battered and bloodied, retreated into the forest, their tails between their legs. Calder stood at the center of the clearing, his chest heaving, his fur matted with blood. He didn’t move, his eyes scanning the forest, waiting to make sure the threat was truly gone. Serena swallowed hard, her pulse still racing as she tried to steady her breathing. The forest was silent again, but the tension in the air lingered, thick and heavy. Finally, Calder shifted back into his human form, his breath coming in slow, measured gasps as he turned to face her. His dark eyes were intense, filled with something she couldn’t quite read. “You’re welcome,” he said, his voice low, rough from the fight. Serena’s jaw clenched, the words she wanted to say stuck in her throat. She wanted to snap back, to tell him she didn’t need his help, but the truth was, she had needed it. And that fact grated on her more than anything. Before she could respond, another figure stepped out of the shadows. Serena’s breath caught. Ronan. He was tall, imposing, with sharp features and eyes that gleamed with cold, calculated intelligence. Unlike the feral wildness of his pack, Ronan exuded a quiet, dangerous control. He moved with an unsettling calm, as though everything was part of some grand plan he had already anticipated. His eyes landed on Serena, and she felt a chill run down her spine. “So,” he said, his voice smooth, almost amused. “You’re the one they’ve been talking about.” Serena’s heart pounded as Ronan stepped closer, his gaze never leaving hers. He wasn’t like the others. There was no malice in his expression, no outward aggression. But there was something far more dangerous beneath the surface—an intelligence that set him apart from the wolves he commanded. “You’re stronger than you look,” Ronan said, his eyes gleaming with interest. “I can see why Calder would want to protect you.” Serena bristled at the implication, her anger flaring. “I don’t need anyone’s protection.” Ronan smiled, a cold, predatory smile. “No, I suppose you don’t. But you could be so much more than just a lone wolf.” He took another step forward, his presence filling the space between them. “You have potential, Serena. Potential that’s being wasted. Align yourself with the right pack—my pack—and you could be powerful.” Her blood boiled at his suggestion, the sheer arrogance of it making her want to lash out. He thinks I’ll just fall in line? Become one of his wolves? “I’m not interested,” she said, her voice sharp, defiant. “I don’t need a pack. Least of all yours.” Ronan’s eyes darkened, but his smile never wavered. “We’ll see about that.” The tension in the air was suffocating, the unspoken threat hanging between them like a knife’s edge. Serena’s muscles tensed, every instinct screaming at her to be ready for whatever came next. But Ronan didn’t attack. He didn’t need to. His message had been delivered loud and clear. With one last, lingering look, Ronan turned and disappeared into the forest, leaving Serena standing in the aftermath of the fight, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Calder moved closer, his expression serious as his gaze flicked between her and the place where Ronan had disappeared. “He’s not going to leave you alone,” Calder said, his voice grim. “You’re on his radar now.” Serena’s jaw clenched, the weight of his words sinking in. She had known from the moment Ronan had appeared that this wasn’t over. He wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted. “And you think I should just run?” she snapped, her frustration boiling over. “Just hide?” Calder’s eyes softened, though his expression remained serious. “I think you need protection. And right now, you’re not going to get it on your own.” Serena’s breath hitched. She hated that he was right. She hated even more that her pride was the only thing keeping her from admitting it. “I can help you,” Calder said, his voice softer now. “But you need to trust me.” The silence between them stretched out, heavy with the weight of her decision. Serena’s pulse raced, her mind spinning as she wrestled with her instincts. She didn’t want to trust anyone. She didn’t want to rely on anyone. But Ronan was a threat she couldn’t ignore. With a slow, reluctant nod, Serena finally spoke. “Fine.” But the word tasted bitter on her tongue.
