Lines Crossed

Selene barely made it back to her suite before her legs gave out. She slid down the locked door, pressing her forehead against her knees, trying to steady her breathing. Her lips still burned from Kai’s kiss. Her skin tingled where his hands had gripped her waist. Every inch of her body felt alive in a way it hadn’t in years. *This is wrong. This is dangerous. This could destroy you.* She repeated the words like a mantra, but they felt weaker each time. The man was a suspected criminal. A manipulator. Someone who had invaded her privacy in the most invasive ways possible. And yet… when he kissed her, it didn’t feel like manipulation. It felt like hunger. Raw, desperate hunger that mirrored the emptiness she had carried for so long. She stood up on shaky legs and went to the bathroom. The mirror showed a woman she barely recognized — flushed cheeks, swollen lips, eyes bright with conflicting emotions. She splashed cold water on her face, but it did nothing to cool the fire Kai had lit inside her. A soft knock startled her. “Dr. Hart?” Margaret’s calm voice came through the door. “Mr. Voss asked me to bring you this.” Selene opened the door cautiously. Margaret held out a small velvet box and an envelope. “He said it’s for you. No cameras in here,” she added quietly, as if reading Selene’s thoughts. “Not in the bathrooms.” Selene took the items with trembling hands and locked the door again. She opened the envelope first. *Selene,* *One kiss and you ran like I was the devil himself. Maybe I am. But even the devil was once an angel.* *Wear this tonight. Let me see you in something other than armor.* *— Kai* Inside the velvet box was a stunning necklace — a delicate crimson ruby pendant on a thin gold chain. It was beautiful. Expensive. And the exact shade of deep red that matched the growing danger between them. Selene stared at it for a long time. She should send it back. She should demand another session to reset boundaries. Instead, she found herself clasping the necklace around her neck. The ruby rested heavy and warm between her breasts. She changed into a simple but elegant black silk dress that hugged her figure — one she had packed for professional dinners, not midnight encounters. Then she sat on the edge of the bed, conflicted. At 11:30 PM, another knock came. This time, it wasn’t Margaret. Kai stood in the hallway wearing a black shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hair slightly messy. His eyes immediately dropped to the ruby pendant, and a slow, satisfied smile spread across his face. “You wore it.” “I shouldn’t have,” Selene replied, but she didn’t close the door. He stepped inside without waiting for invitation, closing the door softly behind him. The room suddenly felt too small. Too intimate. “Why did you come here?” she asked, crossing her arms. “Because I can’t stop thinking about that kiss,” he said simply. “And because I know you can’t either.” Selene backed away until her legs hit the bed. “This has to stop. I’m your therapist. There are ethical rules. Laws.” Kai followed, stalking her with that predatory grace. “Rules are for people who are afraid of what they want. Are you afraid, Selene?” “Yes,” she whispered honestly. “Good.” He stopped right in front of her. “Fear makes everything more intense.” He reached out and traced the ruby pendant with one finger, his knuckle brushing the swell of her breast. Selene’s breath hitched. “Tell me to leave,” he murmured, echoing his words from earlier in his father’s office. “Say it, and I’ll walk out right now.” Selene opened her mouth… but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she found herself rising on her toes and kissing him again. This time, there was no hesitation. Kai groaned deeply, pulling her hard against him. His hands roamed down her back, cupping her ass and lifting her effortlessly. She wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her to the bed. They fell onto the silk sheets in a tangle of limbs and desperate kisses. Kai’s mouth moved from her lips to her neck, sucking and biting in a way that made her moan. His hand slid up her thigh, pushing the dress higher. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted this,” he growled against her skin. “Watching you. Learning you. Waiting for the moment you’d stop fighting.” Selene arched into him as his fingers found the edge of her lace panties. Part of her brain was screaming to stop, but her body was winning. She tugged at his shirt, desperate to feel his skin. Kai sat up briefly to pull his shirt off, revealing a powerful, sculpted torso marked with faint scars. Selene ran her hands over his chest, feeling the heat and strength there. He kissed her again, deeper, more possessive. His hand slipped between her thighs, finding her already wet and ready. When his fingers stroked her, Selene cried out, gripping his shoulders. “That’s it,” he whispered. “Let go for me.” The pleasure built fast and intense. Kai watched her face the entire time, drinking in every moan, every gasp, like it was oxygen. When she came hard around his fingers, he swallowed her cry with another searing kiss. But he didn’t stop there. He removed her dress slowly, reverently, kissing every inch of skin he exposed. The ruby pendant lay between her breasts as he worshipped her body with his mouth and hands. By the time he finally moved over her, naked and hard, Selene was trembling with need. “Are you sure?” he asked, giving her one last chance. Instead of answering, she pulled him down and guided him inside her. The sensation was overwhelming. Kai was thick and long, filling her completely. He moved with controlled power at first, then faster as her nails dug into his back. Their bodies moved together in perfect, sinful rhythm — the storm outside mirroring the one inside the room. When they both reached climax, it was explosive. Kai buried his face in her neck, groaning her name like a prayer as he spilled inside her. For several long minutes afterward, they lay tangled together, breathing heavily. Selene stared at the ceiling, reality slowly creeping back in. What had she done? Kai rolled onto his side and pulled her against his chest, stroking her hair. “Don’t regret this,” he said quietly. “Not yet.” “I just slept with my patient,” she whispered, horrified at herself. “In his own house. While trapped here.” “You didn’t sleep with a patient,” he corrected. “You slept with a man who has been obsessed with you for months.” Selene pulled away slightly to look at him. “How long have you really been watching me?” Kai’s expression turned serious. “Six months. Since I first saw your profile and read your published papers on trauma bonding. You were brilliant. And broken in ways that called to me.” Before Selene could respond, a loud crash echoed from somewhere in the mansion. Kai tensed immediately. He got up and pulled on his pants. “Stay here.” But Selene wasn’t about to be left behind. She threw on her dress and followed him into the hallway. They found Margaret standing near the grand staircase, looking pale. “What happened?” Kai demanded. “One of the staff… James… he’s dead. Found at the bottom of the east wing stairs. Looks like he fell… or was pushed.” Selene’s blood ran cold. The same east wing where they had kissed earlier. Kai’s face hardened into a mask of controlled fury. “Lock down the estate. No one leaves their rooms.” As Margaret hurried away, Kai turned to Selene. The lover from minutes ago was gone. This was the dangerous billionaire again. “Someone is trying to send a message,” he said quietly. “And now you’re in the middle of it.” Selene wrapped her arms around herself, the ruby pendant suddenly feeling like a brand against her skin. “What have I gotten myself into?” she whispered. Kai pulled her close, kissing the top of her head with surprising tenderness. “Welcome to my world, Selene. There’s no going back now.”
