prompt 2:A love unbound

252 Words
Sophia and Ethan were inseparable. From age five, they'd raced through muddy streets, shared secrets under mango trees, and sneaked into each other’s houses when storms hit. His mom called her “my second daughter.” Her dad trusted Ethan more than her own brothers. Now, in their teens, the world was changing — but they were still each other’s world. That afternoon after school, they sat on the hood of Ethan’s dad’s old car, licking ice cream and laughing about nothing. “You remember when you cried because I cut your teddy’s hair?” Sophia teased. “I was three!” Ethan groaned. “Still counts,” she grinned. “You screamed like a goat.” He bumped her shoulder. “Yeah? You wet your pants on the first day of school.” She shoved him, but they both burst out laughing. The wind blew gently, and for a moment, there was quiet. Sophia looked at him — not like a best friend. Something was shifting in her eyes. Something soft. “You ever think about… us?” she asked suddenly. Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Us how?” Sophia shrugged, playing it off. “Forget it.” But he didn’t forget. That night, as he lay in bed, he kept hearing her voice. *You ever think about… us?* He stared at the ceiling. His heart beat louder than usual. Neither of them said anything the next day. But something had changed. And neither of them could stop thinking about it.
