⋄CHAPTER 1⋄

Kelsey was a young woman with an impressive work ethic. She was only 22 years old, but already, she had established herself as a rising star at a prestigious accounting firm in Los Angeles. Kelsey was dedicated and hardworking, putting in long hours and going above and beyond to ensure that everything was done to the best of her ability. Despite her success at work, Kelsey's personal life had taken a devastating blow. She sat at her desk, scrolling through her emails with a sense of growing dread. The emails were from various creditors and debt collectors, all demanding payment for the money she owed. Kelsey felt overwhelmed and helpless, wondering how she was ever going to get out of this mess. She had always been a responsible person, someone who paid her bills on time and made sure everything was taken care of. That was until her boyfriend of many years, Dylan, had recently cheated on her and to make matters worse, he got the girl pregnant and left Kelsey with all of their shared debts. The biggest one, being the apartment that they once shared. The apartment was a modern and stylish 2-bedroom located in the heart of the city. The building had a sleek and contemporary design, with clean lines, large windows, and an industrial-chic aesthetic that was popular in the city. The apartment itself was spacious and bright, with an open-concept living and dining area that was perfect for entertaining. The kitchen was sleek and modern, with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and ample storage space. Kelsey loved to cook, and the kitchen had everything she needed to whip up delicious meals for herself and her friends. She had envisioned her future with Dylan, raising their kids in that apartment. Unfortunately, that dream would never be a reality. They had bought that apartment together, and Kelsey had taken on the mortgage since she had a stable job while Dylan was still a medical student. Additionally, she had purchased all of their furniture on credit, thinking that they would be able to pay it off together. That was the plan, for Dylan to finish school and get his dream job as a general practioner. Kelsey was patient with him, she supported him and took on the financial burden, knowing that one day, he'd assist her and take on his responsibilities. She looked forward to their future together, to the life they were building together and hoped to one day be his wife. But Dylan's betrayal had left Kelsey with a mountain of debt to tackle on her own. Now he was starting a family with that little missy who knew he had a girlfriend in the first place. Instead of being at Kelseys side, helping her through the financial burdens that plagued her, he was playing house with someone else and waiting for the arrival of their baby. It was a source of constant stress, and she was struggling to keep up with the payments. Kelsey felt like she was drowning, unable to find a way out of the situation and even though the apartment was up for sale, she just couldn't find a buyer. Fortunately, Kelsey had two best friends who had been there for her through everything - Carmen and Angie. Carmen was a shy Virgo with a slim, tall frame. She had always been the quiet one of the group, but she was fiercely loyal to her friends. Angie, on the other hand, was an outspoken Pisces who was always the life of the party. She was athletic and loved to be active, and her boyfriend was actually close friends with Dylan. That had made things a bit awkward, but Angie had never let that come between her and Kelsey. Both of her friends had been horrified when they found out what Dylan had done. They couldn't believe that someone they had known for so long could do something so heartless. She thought back to the conversation she had with Angie and Carmen. She had just broken down and cried after discovering that her ex-boyfriend, Dylan, had cheated on her and left her with all their debt. "Kelsey, we're so sorry," Angie had said, her voice full of concern. "We had no idea that he was capable of doing something like that." Carmen had nodded in agreement. "Yeah, he seemed like such a nice guy. I can't believe he would do something so terrible." Kelsey had wiped away her tears, grateful for her friends' comforting words. "I don't know what to do," she had said, her voice trembling. "I feel so lost." Angie had put her arm around Kelsey. "Don't worry, we'll figure it out together. You don't have to go through this alone." They had been there for Kelsey through all of the tears and the anger, and they had promised to support her in any way they could. Kelsey looked up from her computer screen, pulling herself back to reality, and rubbed her tired eyes. She couldn't bear to read another email about the debt she was in. It seemed like every time she checked her inbox, there was another reminder of the financial mess her ex-boyfriend Dylan had left her in. She tried to focus on the spreadsheet in front of her, but her mind kept wandering to thoughts of her mounting bills and dwindling bank account. Just then, her work friend Kade poked his head into her cubicle. "Hey, Kelsey. Lunch break in ten, you in?" Kade was a tall, lanky guy with shaggy brown hair and a perpetual five-o'clock shadow. Kelsey had always found him a bit scruffy, but charming in his own way. She shrugged and said, "Sure, where are we going?" "There's that new coffee shop that opened down the street I've been meaning to try," Kade replied. "I hear they've got killer sandwiches and decent coffee. You game?" Kelsey nodded, grateful for the distraction. She grabbed her purse and followed Kade out of the office. The vibrant California sunshine greeted them as they stepped outside, casting a warm glow upon Kelsey's petite figure. Her long, lustrous brunette hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing her radiant face. With an air of elegance and confidence, she walked alongside Kade, her slender frame exuding grace and poise. As they strolled down the bustling street, Kade animatedly shared his weekend plans, his words flowing effortlessly while Kelsey listened attentively. The weight of her financial burdens began to lift, if only momentarily, as she found solace in the lighthearted banter with her friend. Their destination soon came into view—a cozy coffee shop with large windows and a welcoming atmosphere. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the delightful scent of pastries permeated the air, awakening Kelsey's senses and stirring a hint of excitement within her. Kade placed his order at the counter and then leaned in to whisper to Kelsey. "Check out the girl behind the counter, Genevieve. She's beautiful," he said, nudging Kelsey with a sly grin. Kelsey rolled her eyes and shook her head, "You're always chasing after some girl, aren't you?" she teased. Kade chuckled and shrugged, "Can't help it, man. It's in my DNA." He then proceeded to awkwardly attempt to flirt with Genevieve, stumbling over his words and fidgeting nervously. Kade's face turned red with embarrassment as he shuffled away from the counter. Kelsey tried to hide her amusement by looking down at her phone, but she couldn't help but chuckle. After their lunch arrived, they found a small table by the window and settled in to eat, and Kade tried to save face, "She's just playing hard to get. I'll get her number next time." Kelsey shook her head and laughed. "I don't think that's going to happen, Kade. You might want to try a different approach." Kade shrugged and took a bite of his sandwich. "Eh, it was worth a shot." Kade then pulled out his phone and began scrolling through his emails. "Hey, check this out," he said, turning the phone towards Kelsey. "The security guard at work just sent me this. It's a job posting for a part-time driver. Delivering packages at night and on weekends. Pays pretty well." Kelsey's interest was piqued. "Do they say who it's for?" Kade shook his head. "Nope, it's posted by an anonymous person. But the pay is good, and you could definitely use the extra cash, right?" Kelsey bit her thumb nail and frowned, "What are you thinking? Should I apply?" "The pay is too good to pass up. I would've applied if there was more than one position but I know you need it more than I do." Kade said as he reached over and held her hand. Kelsey nodded in agreement and smiled in appreciation. "Thanks Kade. Send me the details, I'll apply as soon as I get back to the office." Kade grinned, "Sure thing." They finished their lunch and headed back to work, with Kelsey feeling a glimmer of hope that this new opportunity could help alleviate some of her financial burdens. As soon as she reached her desk, she opened her emails and went straight to Kade's and opened the job posting he'd sent her. She read through the criteria and felt a sense of excited. Woah! If this is true, I wouldn't need to sell the apartment and I'd be up to day on my payment in no time, Kelsey thought, as she read through the payment terms. She gathered the required documents needed and scanned over the text one more time, making sure she weren't missing anything. Okay, she thought, here goes nothing. •••2 Days Later••• Kelsey couldn't help but feel a little nervous as she waited for her interview. She had woken up early that morning to carefully select her outfit for the occasion. She chose a knee-length black pencil skirt that hugged her curves in all the right places, paired with a simple white blouse that was both elegant and professional. Her hair was styled in loose waves, and she wore a light touch of makeup to accentuate her natural features and bring out the hazel colour of her eyes. Moments seemed to stretch as she mentally rehearsed her responses, her mind teeming with a million what-ifs. Just as she was about to succumb to the anxious thoughts, Kelsey decided to break free from the stagnant atmosphere and quench her thirst. She ventured towards the refrigerator, her steps cautious yet purposeful. However, fate had a different plan in store for her. As she approached the counter, a sudden force jolted her forward, threatening to send her precious bottle of water crashing to the ground. In that split second, a firm hand reached out, enveloping her trembling fingers, and steadying her with an unexpected strength. "Sorry about that," a deep, velvety voice resonated through her being, momentarily distracting her from the chaos of the moment. Kelsey instinctively looked up, her eyes meeting a gaze that seemed to hold a universe of mystery and allure. She found herself spellbound by a pair of emerald green eyes that sparkled with a captivating mix of intensity and gentleness. It was as if time had momentarily halted, leaving only their electric connection. The man before her was a captivating sight to behold. Standing tall and exuding an air of confidence, he possessed a rugged yet refined charm that was difficult to ignore. His dark hair was impeccably styled, framing his handsome face and accentuating his smoldering Latin features. Kelsey's gaze involuntarily trailed over the inked artwork that peeked out from beneath the sleeves and collar of his black suit, the intricate designs adding an element of intrigue and raw magnetism. She couldn't help but be drawn to the skull tattoo adorning the back of his left hand, its presence invoking a sense of rebellious allure. "It's alright," Kelsey finally managed to respond, her voice laced with a tinge of breathlessness. "My fault entirely. I should have been more attentive." A breathtaking smile graced his lips, revealing deep dimples that danced playfully on his cheeks. "No harm done. Lucas, by the way," he introduced himself, his voice carrying a hint of a melodious accent that only added to his allure. Kelsey's heart fluttered at the sound of his name, a symphony of emotions swirling within her. She hesitantly offered her own introduction, her words stumbling slightly as she struggled to maintain her composure in the presence of this captivating stranger. The electricity between them was undeniable, a magnetic pull that defied explanation. As Lucas excused himself and made his way to another table, Kelsey stood rooted to the spot, her senses ablaze with the imprint of their brief encounter. A myriad of thoughts and possibilities swirled within her mind, but the impending interview forced her to refocus her attention. Taking a deep breath, Kelsey gathered herself, determined to make the most of the opportunity before her. As she approached her table, she noticed a man walking towards her and She realized her interviewer arrived, and tried to focus on the job at hand. Kelsey was taken aback by the appearance of the man named Pinch. He had a bald head and was covered in tattoos. He was wearing a black suit and looked like he could be a bouncer at a nightclub. Kelsey's initial impression was that he was intimidating, but she tried to remain composed. As Kelsey sat down at the table, Pinch began the interview with a gruff voice, "So you're interested in the driver position?" Kelsey nodded nervously, "Yes, I am. I'm reliable and have a clean driving record." Pinch raised an eyebrow, "Do you have any experience with deliveries?" Kelsey hesitated, "No, but I'm a quick learner and willing to work hard." she said with determination unaware of the man observing her from a few tables behind her. Lucas studied her intently and listened in on her interview. It was as if a gentle radiance surrounded her, illuminating the room and drawing his attention like a moth to a flame. His eyes traced the elegant contours of her face, the gentle curve of her cheekbones, and the softness of her lips that held the promise of untold stories. Her hazel eyes, adorned with delicate lashes, sparkled with a kaleidoscope of emotions, reflecting her inner strength and vulnerability. The light breeze played with strands of her long, brunette hair, casting an enchanting spell as it swayed with a graceful rhythm. Lucas found himself entranced by the way she carried herself, exuding a quiet confidence that seemed to blossom from within. Every movement, every subtle gesture, spoke of grace and poise. The way she held herself with a touch of restraint, as if she were guarding a hidden world of dreams and aspirations, only added to her allure. It was in that moment that he decided that he wanted to see more of Kelsey and under no circumstance should she know who he truly was. Pinch nodded, "Alright, well the job pays well and you'll be delivering packages to different locations. It's important that you're discreet and follow instructions carefully." Kelsey nodded, "Of course. When would I start?" Pinch smirked, "You'll start tonight. Meet me at this address at 9 pm sharp." He slid a piece of paper across the table with an address written on it. Kelsey's eyes widened in surprise, "Tonight? I thought I would have more time to prepare." Pinch leaned in closer, "We need someone reliable and we don't have time to waste. You want the job or not?" Kelsey took a deep breath, "Yes, I want the job." Pinch nodded, "Good. Be there at 9 pm sharp. And don't be late." Kelsey left the coffee shop feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. She couldn't believe she had landed the job so quickly, but she also had a feeling that there was more to this job than just delivering packages. But she didn't dwell on the thought too long, she needed the money, that's all that mattered. Meanwhile, back at the coffee shop, Pinch collected his things, walked over to Lucas's table and took a seat. "Spike, why didn't you sit in on the interview? You know we need to check everyone thoroughly." Lucas took a sip of his coffee and looked at Pinch. "She seemed like a good fit. Plus, it would be better if she didn't know what my dealing are. The less she knows, the better." Pinch raised an eyebrow. "You think she's going to be a problem?" "No," Lucas said calmly. "I think she's going to be an asset. But we have to be careful. We don't want any unnecessary attention. She's your priority from now onwards. You'll provide her with instructions for every job and she'll answer only to you. " Pinch nodded in agreement. "Alright, I'll trust your judgement. Just keep a close eye on her. I don't like people who are unpredictable. She's smart, I can tell. I just don't understand why she's trying to get this job." "Look into it if you must." Lucas leaned back in his chair and smiled. "Until then, I've got this under control."
