Four days after the French toast incident, I got a phone call from a number I didn't recognize.
I almost didn't answer. I was in the middle of a deeply satisfying argument with Marie Antoinette — the succulent, not the historical figure, though honestly the energy was similar — about whether she was getting too much sun, and I was losing.
But something made me pick up.
"Is this Mia Calloway?" The voice was a woman's — cool, precise, with the particular cadence of someone who has spent decades being the smartest person in every room and is only mildly tired of it.
"Mia Cross, legally," I said. "Who's this?"
"Eleanor Voss." A pause, presumably to let the name land. It did. "I believe you know who I am."
I sat down on the balcony railing — very carefully - because it was twelve floors up, and I had plans that required me to be alive.
Eleanor Voss. Former CFO of Calloway Industries. The woman my father referred to only as that Voss woman in tones of equal parts admiration and guilt. She'd been forced out of the company six years ago under circumstances my father never quite explained, and I'd never quite stopped wondering about it.
"How did you get this number?" I asked.
"Your number isn't particularly hard to find when you're motivated. I've been watching the cross acquisition closely." Another pause. "I've been watching you closely since the engagement was announced. You're not what I expected."
"What did you expect?"
"A victim," she said, without cruelty. Just — fact. "What I see is something more interesting. A woman who moved into that penthouse with three boxes and houseplants named after historical queens."
"How do you—" I stopped. "Did you have someone watching me?"
"I had someone watching the building. There's a difference." She let me process that. "Mia. I'm going to say something, and I want you to hear it fully. Damian Cross did not stumble upon your father's company in distress. He engineered that distress. And I can prove it, because he did the same thing to me six years ago. I have been building a file ever since."
The city noise below me continued — traffic, a siren somewhere, the ordinary sounds of a world that didn't know it had just shifted.
"I'm listening," I said.
We talked for two hours.
Eleanor Voss was sixty-two years old, five-foot-four, and contained more controlled fury per square inch than any human being I had ever encountered. She laid out what she knew in precise, organized sections, like a woman who had rehearsed this particular conversation a thousand times and was not going to let a single fact land wrong.
Cross Enterprises had been quietly acquiring Calloway Industries competitors for eighteen months before the "acquisition." They'd planted an informant — later confirmed to be my father's junior VP, a man named Greg who I had always found irritating for reasons I couldn't articulate and now understood completely. Greg had fed proprietary client information to Cross, which Damian's team used to poach three of Calloway's biggest contracts. Without those contracts, the company's debt position became unsustainable. Without sustainable debt, the bank called the loans.
Damian Cross had walked in with his checkbook at precisely the moment my father had no other options.
The marriage clause was in the acquisition agreement from the first draft. My father — desperate, ashamed, and not thinking clearly — had signed without a lawyer present. Damian's legal team had made sure of that. The meeting had been scheduled during a time they knew my father's usual counsel was out of the country.
"The marriage clause is what I don't understand," I said when she finished. My voice was steady. My hands were not. "Why? He could have bought the company without me. What does he need a wife for?"
"That," Eleanor said, "I don't know. Yet. But I think it matters. And I think finding out is part of what needs to happen."
"You've been building a file for six years," I said slowly. "What are you planning to do with it?"
"That depends," she said, "on whether you're the kind of woman who wants to leave quietly, or the kind who wants to win."
I thought about my father's signed name in that burgundy folder. I thought about Helena's measuring gaze over tea. I thought about Damian's grey eyes noting my furniture-status. I thought about twenty-four years of being the useful one, the reliable one, the one who held everything together while no one asked if she was okay.
I thought about the filing cabinet in his study. Third drawer. Locked.
"Tell me what winning looks like," I said.
Eleanor made a sound that, in another woman, might have been a laugh. In her, it was more like a blade being tested.
"It looks like you, sitting on Damian Cross's board of directors, with his company's sins on the public record and your family's debt erased." She paused. "It also looks like taking your time. This is not a sprint, Mia. This is a long game."
"I have nothing but time," I said. "I'm unemployed and legally residing in my enemy's penthouse."
This time, it was definitely a laugh.
"I'm going to enjoy working with you," Eleanor said.
We arranged to meet the following Thursday at a café in the West Village — nondescript, cash only, not the kind of place that took reservations or showed up in Damian's social orbit.
I hung up. I sat on the balcony for a long time with the city spread below me, like a map of everything that was about to change.
Queen Nzinga caught a sunbeam on the balcony railing beside me, doing what succulents do: existing, patiently, refusing to die.
Good strategy, honestly.
What I didn't know that evening — what I couldn't have known — was that downstairs, in his study, Damian Cross was sitting at his desk with a glass of whiskey he hadn't drunk and the locked filing cabinet drawer open in front of him.
Reading something he hadn't looked at in a very long time.
And somewhere in his chest, where men like him keep the things they don't examine, something had started making a sound like regret.
