6 I paused in front of the veterinarian clinic, stalling at the entrance. A colourful sign with a griffin by the front door welcomed me, but I didn’t feel very welcome. I hated being the newcomer. When I first arrived at the Griffin Sanctuary as an intern, at least we were all new. But now, as the apprentice who came in late in the semester, I was the odd woman out. With a deep breath, I gathered my courage and stepped inside. The small reception area was painted a calming light blue and smelled like antiseptic, which I didn’t mind.
