Chapter Nineteen
Liz stopped to check on Nate one more time before leaving. When she had woken up, they made sure she wasn’t suffering any lingering adverse effects from being knocked out; then she’d been discharged. Aside from the busted lip and black eye, she was actually doing just fine, especially compared to Nate.
The medics had brought them in together she was told, and then they wheeled Nate back in for surgery right away to remove the bullet and stop the blood loss. He had lost too much, and there had been some concern about him for a while. For now, he seemed to be leveling out but was still asleep, and she was planning to leave before he woke up.
“Please don’t go yet.” Sam looked ready to cry.
“I have to, Sam. It’s for the best. Nate needs someone better than me.”
