The banging on the door woke Katkin, and she sat up blearily in the double bed. She could hear cockerels crowing outside in the yard of the Compass Rose and knew by the low light it must be just after dawn. Remembering she had begged Jacq to come as early as he could in the morning, she threw on her robe and rushed over to the door. She turned the heavy brass key in the lock, smiling expectantly at the thought of seeing him again. But her joyous greeting died on her lips when she saw the identity of her early morning visitor.
