Chapter Two

1806 Words
I arrived back at The Wash just in time. Having ran home to take a shower and pull on something that looked possibly date-like. The human won't be bad company; however, I won't turn him. I won't be one of those silly wolves that thinks a newly turned wolf will love you. You all but sign their death certificate. The change, the fighting, sometimes just suicide. Very few live a nice long life. I smile as his car pulls up, he hands me a few flowers, nothing too extravagant, just a few carnations and some baby's breath. I ask him to stop at my home before we go to dinner. He pulls into my drive and notices the large doggie door. "Is it safe to go in?" I laugh, the door is for me but he doesn't need to know that. "I bought it that way I've never had a pet." I smile and he looks at me like I've gone mad "I'll come by and replace that door for you if you want. A large doggie door like that is inviting robbers." I shake my head "No need, I've got one of those sensers that goes off with large dog barkings if someone gets to close. The doggy door just makes it look more real." I hop out of the car and head to the house taking my keys out as I go. Carefully I take a sniff to make sure no one is close, it's clear, I open the door and walk into my small living room. I can hear him behind me, he's human so he doesn't have the same grace when he walks, his shoes clunk on the floor. I head to my kitchen just off the living room and pull down a vase, a mortar and pestle, and an asprin. He walks into the kitchen "Cozy" he says. I smile and shake my head, cozy tends to be code for small and cramped. I grind up an asprin and put it's powder in the vase. "Why are you doing that?" I look up "The ground up asprin makes the flowers last longer. Where are we going for dinner?" I fill the vase about half way before putting the flowers in it. "Oh right, dinner! Chinese okay with you? I know this great place that makes awesome barbeque pork fried rice." I smile, it meets my eyes this time "That sounds amazing!" I walk back into the living room and place the flowers on my coffee table before turning and holding my hand out to him. "All set, I just didn't want them to wilt in the car they are so pretty." As you can guess female wolves don't get a lot of flowers. No need for romance if they are willing to just give in and you can leave. If the female gets pregnant the male might stick around to see if it results in a child. Most wolves will leave breeding pairs alone. My own mother was one of the lucky ones, I'm born, not bitten. I head to the door, only a human would think of bringing flowers. Only a simple person would put much thought into them I guess. It's a dead plant, only thing I did was slow down it's decaying process. "So you said Chinese food? I haven't had some in so long. I tried that one buffet but the food was bad." He smiles, heading out after me closing the door and checking that it's locked. "This place you will love, it's a few towns over but it's worth the trip." Music and small talk fill the car. His name is Robert, but everyone calls him Bob or Bobbie, he prefers Robert though. He's 43, double my age, he was shocked when I'd said “yes”, apparently our car wash sucks he only comes through to see me. He likes classic rock which is okay. I'm more of a country music fan,he wrinkles up his nose at this like he's smelled something nasty. The classic rock is alright, he offered to change it for me but I declined as ‘Put Some Sugar On Me’ came over the radio. I sang along for a moment before I realized he was listening intently. I blushed at my bad singing but he kindly insisted it was great and I should keep going. I think he was giving the song to much thought so I changed the topic quickly. The restaurant was nice enough. Chinese art hung on the walls, pillers in the middle of the room painted red, a large fish tank. The woman smiled as we entered. She put us by the tank. I watched the fish swim to the other side before making a lame excuse to switch seats and sit next to him. He holds my hand under the table until the food comes. He was right, it was worth the trip. Wonton soup, to start, I had a Coke with mine but he ordered a beer. Barbeque pork fried rice, pot stickers, and teriyaki chicken followed. It was all so good. He asked for some to go boxes. They layed stacked on the table, I turned my body towards him as we talked. He's got such a sweet smile. His eyes though, they held a bit of mischief. The smell hits me, it's Diesel. I heard the bike but I thought being so far out it might be someone else. Robert’s smile falls a bit as Diesel walks in. I pretend not to notice, my back facing the door. I run my hand through my hair to bring Roberts attention back to me. He smiles again, and I smile back. We talk for a while again. He's a banker, he tells me about a garden he has and his on going fight with a ground hog. I laugh at the idea of raging a war on a ground hog. Diesel's hands come down on the table, I jump slightly from the sound of it. Robert looks pissed, no more smiling, my smile drops quickly as well. "Hello Amber fancy seeing you here." I glare daggers at him. "Diesel." was my reply, I flip my hair and turn back to my eating companion. "We still on for tomorrow night?" If looks could kill he would be dead and burned. "Yes, business tomorrow. As you can see I'm on a date. If you don't mind I'd like to get back to it." Robert cleared his throat openly, "If this is about business then it should be done during business hours. Anything else is just unprofessional." I smiled at him, he was right of course but still it's silly for a human to chastise a wolf. I slip my hand into his "Let's get out of here" I say quickly not glancing over at Diesel. Roberts face splits into a big smile. I pick up our to-go boxes and wait for him by the door. I can see Diesel sitting in a booth on the other side of the room eating his food looking quite pissed off about it. I hold out my hand as Robert joins me at the door, we walk out smiling at each other, more small talk. More classic rock as we ride around in his car. He had not planned on leaving the diner until later, so now we where trying to find something to do. I quickly suggested we head to the river. He turned left and headed that way. I slipped my shoes off and rolled up my pants so I could stick my feet in the water when we arrived. I watched him do the same, we sat back on the rocky shore line continuing our conversation. It was clear he didn't think Deisel was just some random work person. The way he had fallowed us there. I played it off saying he was a distant relitive, and we where working out a deal for his shop to give out free washes, with a standard fee going to the wash of course. He nodded his head but still he seemed unsure. We stayed like that for a while before he asked what time I had to be to work the next day. I told him I had to be in at 8 am for my 10 hour shift. He checked his watch gave a low moan and said it was past midnight. We walked back to the car hand-in-hand. He seemed content. Insisting I take the to-go boxes for my lunch tomorrow. He walked me to the door, the bag with the smiley face and big red ‘Thank You’ hanging from his hand. I waited next to the door with him slightly awkward, not sure how to properly end a date. We exchanged the normal 'I had a great time' and the 'we should do this again.’ I got out a pen from my purse and wrote my number down on a piece of paper. He tucked it into his wallet. I heard a footstep, not so much a full step but a shifting of weight. Someone was watching, Diesel, I thought. Okay I can give him something to watch. I stood up on the tips of my toes and placed a kiss on Robert’s cheek, his hands went to my waist to keep me from stumbling. "I really did have a great time Rob" I whispered it in his ear. That was enough, he turned his head and cought my lips up with his. It was so nice, soft at first, before turning more passionate. He made a sound that vibrated down my spine. I backed up into the doorway. He moved with me. I broke first coming up for air, "We can't, I have to be up for work in 6 hours". He nodded his head and laid his forehead against mine. "Just give me a minute" was his reply. I knew what he meant, he got over excited. Human men can do that, but they are quickly able to gather themselves unlike wolves. Wolves have more issues, it's hard to tell a wild animal to control itself. I give him a quick kiss on the cheek as he let's me slip out of his arms. "I'll call you tomorrow" He stated, it wasn't a question. I nodded "You better." I took the smiley face bag from him and headed inside. I listened to his car start, and pull off. That was the last time I would see Robert. It's not that I didn't want another date I would have actually loved one. It's because his picture was flashing across the 6 o'clock news as the body that was found in a ditch three towns over.
