Eloise’ POV “What do you mean?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to steady it. My eyes widened as his words sank in, and a gnawing doubt clawed at my mind. If this is what he’s implying, then did he lie? No—he couldn’t have. Vince and I had gone to the market together. I wasn’t imagining that. “You don’t believe me?” I demanded, my voice growing firmer as a spark of defiance flared up. “I’m telling you the truth. Vince and I went to the market, and I bought ornaments for my husband. Why won’t you believe me? Ask your townspeople.
