THE MISSING RING 💍

1686 Words
CHAPTER ONE Elena Hart had always believed happiness was supposed to be quiet. She had never needed the kind of love that made people jealous or filled social media with grand declarations. For her, happiness lived in smaller things: a warm hand reaching for hers beneath a table, someone remembering exactly how she liked her coffee, or the comfort of knowing that after a difficult day, there was someone waiting for her at home. For three years, Adrian Cole had been that person. She stood before the bedroom mirror, fastening a pair of silver earrings while the morning sunlight slipped through the curtains. Behind her, Adrian was still asleep, one arm resting across the empty side of the bed. She glanced at him through the mirror and smiled. There was something almost unfair about how peaceful he looked in the morning. The man who could silence an entire boardroom with a single look seemed completely different when he was asleep. Without the expensive suits, controlled expressions and carefully chosen words, he looked less like the powerful CEO everyone knew and more like the man she had fallen in love with. Her husband. She turned toward the bedside table and reached for her handbag. "You're staring again." Elena looked over her shoulder. Adrian was awake, his dark hair untidy and his eyes still heavy with sleep. "I wasn't staring." "You were." "You've been awake for about two seconds." "Long enough to catch you." She laughed softly. "Go back to sleep." "I would, but apparently my wife enjoys watching me." "You think very highly of yourself." "I have evidence." His smile made her shake her head. For a moment, everything felt exactly as it should. Then Adrian reached toward the nightstand and stopped. Elena noticed the change immediately. "What happened?" "Nothing." He opened the drawer and searched through it. When he found nothing, he checked the space beside the lamp, then opened the drawer again as though he might have somehow missed what he was looking for. "What are you looking for?" Elena asked. "My ring." She looked at his left hand. The gold wedding band he almost never removed was gone. "You took it off last night?" "I don't remember taking it off." Adrian checked the nightstand once more before getting out of bed. "Maybe it's in the bathroom," Elena suggested. He disappeared into the bathroom and returned a moment later. "It's not there." "The kitchen?" "I didn't go to the kitchen." "You came home late." "I came straight upstairs." His answer came quickly enough for Elena to notice. She leaned against the dresser while he searched through the jacket he had worn the previous day. He checked both pockets, then looked through his trousers and the small tray where he usually kept his watch. Nothing. "When was the last time you remember wearing it?" she asked. "Yesterday morning." "Before you left for work?" "Yes." "And you don't remember taking it off afterward?" "No." He sounded distracted. Elena watched him for another moment. She had seen Adrian under pressure before. Difficult negotiations, tense board meetings and business problems rarely managed to unsettle him for long. He was usually the person everyone else depended on when things went wrong. This seemed different. "Adrian," she said gently. "Why are you so worried?" He stopped searching and looked at her. "I'm not worried." "You are." "It's a wedding ring, Elena." "Exactly. You can replace a ring." His expression changed. "Not this one." She straightened. The ring was important to him. She knew that. It had belonged to his grandfather before Adrian's father gave it to him, and Adrian had once told her that it represented the history of his family. Still, there was something in his voice that made her wonder if the ring meant more than he had ever explained. She decided not to push him. "Maybe you'll find it later," she said. "Maybe." Adrian stepped toward her and kissed her forehead before leaving the room. Elena watched him disappear through the doorway. It was a familiar gesture, one he had given her countless times, yet something about the morning felt different. She couldn't explain why. --- By the time Elena arrived at work, she had almost managed to put the missing ring out of her mind. Her office was already filled with the usual morning chaos. Design samples covered one end of the conference table, her assistant was waiting with a folder of documents, and three different people needed her approval before lunch. It was the kind of environment Elena had grown comfortable with. She had always preferred being busy. Work gave her something practical to focus on, especially when her thoughts became too complicated. She was reviewing a campaign proposal when her phone vibrated. Unknown Number She glanced at the screen but ignored it. A second vibration followed. This time, curiosity won. She opened the message. How long are you going to keep pretending she doesn't know? Elena frowned. She read it again, trying to understand what it meant. Who was "she"? And why had someone sent the message to her? She typed a response. Who is this? The message showed as delivered, but no reply came. Elena placed her phone face down and returned to the campaign proposal. Five minutes later, it vibrated again. The second message was waiting. You should ask Adrian why he really chose you. Her hand stopped over the document. For several seconds, she simply stared at the screen. Adrian had never given her a reason to question why he loved her. Their relationship had grown naturally, or at least that was how she had always remembered it. He had pursued her, stood beside her when her career was still taking shape, met her family and eventually asked her to build a life with him. She had never once wondered whether there was another reason behind his decision. Until now. Elena deleted the message, but the words remained in her mind. Why he really chose you. Whoever had sent it seemed certain that she was missing something. Her phone vibrated again. This time, there was no message. There was a photograph. Elena opened it and immediately recognized Adrian. He was standing outside a large building she didn't recognize, looking several years younger than the man she knew. His expression was serious, almost guarded. Beside him stood Clara Bennett. Elena knew Clara. Everyone in Adrian's professional circle did. She was a corporate lawyer who had worked with the Cole family for years, and Elena had met her several times at business functions. There had never been a reason for Elena to think anything of their relationship. Until she noticed the date. Seven years ago. Her eyes remained fixed on the screen. Seven years. Elena and Adrian had met five years earlier. So the photograph had been taken two years before their relationship began. She enlarged the image, studying Adrian's expression before looking at Clara again. Why had they been together? Then she noticed writing beneath the photograph. Ask Adrian why he was looking for you. Elena's stomach tightened. Looking for her? Before they had met? She stared at the photograph for another few seconds, searching for an explanation that would make sense. There had to be one. Perhaps the photograph had been taken out of context. Perhaps Clara had been helping Adrian with a business matter. Perhaps the anonymous sender simply wanted to frighten her. She wanted to believe that. But there was one problem. The date. And the certainty behind the message. --- Elena arrived home before Adrian that evening. She changed into something comfortable, made herself a cup of tea and settled into the living room with her phone beside her. The photograph was still open. She had considered calling Adrian several times during the drive home, but each time she had stopped herself. She didn't want to confront him over the phone. She wanted to see his face. She wanted to know whether he would tell her the truth without having to be shown the evidence first. At seven-thirty, she heard the front door open. Adrian walked into the house with his briefcase in one hand. His gaze immediately found hers. "You're home early." "I finished work." He nodded and placed his briefcase on the table before walking toward her. Usually, Elena would have smiled when he came home. Tonight, she couldn't. Adrian noticed. "What's wrong?" Elena's eyes moved to his left hand. The ring was still missing. "Did you find it?" "No." He sat across from her. "I'll replace it if I have to." Elena nodded slowly. "I know." Neither of them spoke for a moment. The silence wasn't hostile, but it was unfamiliar. Elena picked up her phone and looked at the photograph again. She could show it to him. She could ask who Clara was, why the photograph existed, and why someone believed Adrian had been looking for her before they met. Instead, she put the phone down. There was another question she needed answered first. "Adrian..." He looked at her. "Yes?" "How did you know my name before we met?" He didn't answer. His entire expression changed. It wasn't confusion. It wasn't surprise. It was the unmistakable stillness of someone who had just heard a question he had been hoping never to hear. Elena felt her heart begin to pound. She had spent three years believing she knew the man sitting across from her. She knew his habits, his temper, his favorite places, the way he became quiet when something bothered him and the way he always reached for her hand whenever he thought she was afraid. Yet now, looking at him, she felt as though she had somehow been introduced to a stranger. Adrian lowered his gaze. When he finally looked back at her, the guarded expression in his eyes had disappeared. What remained was something Elena had never expected to see. Guilt. And suddenly, she knew that whoever had sent those messages had not been lying about one thing. There was a part of her own love story that Adrian had never told her.
