CHAPTER TWO
Elena barely slept.
Adrian's reaction to her question kept returning to her mind. She could still picture the moment his expression changed after she asked how he had known her name before they met.
He hadn't denied it.
That was the part she couldn't get past.
By morning, she had managed to convince herself that there might be a reasonable explanation. Adrian had known hundreds of people before she came into his life. Clara had worked with the Cole family for years. A photograph of them together didn't automatically mean there was something romantic between them.
The problem was the date.
Seven years ago.
Two years before Elena had met Adrian.
She entered the kitchen to find him standing beside the counter, already dressed for work. His coffee sat untouched in front of him.
"Good morning," he said.
"Morning."
His eyes remained on her for a moment.
"Did you sleep?"
"Not really."
He nodded as though he understood, but neither of them mentioned their conversation from the previous night.
Elena poured herself some coffee and sat opposite him. The silence between them was not uncomfortable in the usual way. It carried the weight of a question neither seemed ready to ask.
Adrian eventually picked up his cup.
"I should have told you sooner."
Elena looked at him.
"Told me what?"
He hesitated.
"About my family."
She waited, but he didn't continue.
Instead, he stood and reached for his briefcase.
"We'll talk tonight."
Then he left.
Elena remained at the table, watching the door after it closed.
For the first time since she had married Adrian, she had the uncomfortable feeling that he was preparing her for a truth rather than simply promising to explain himself.
---
At work, Elena opened the photograph again.
She enlarged the image until the details became clearer. Adrian stood outside an old building with Clara beside him. Neither of them appeared relaxed. Clara was looking toward the entrance while Adrian seemed to be watching the street.
The building itself caught Elena's attention.
A brass plaque beside the entrance carried the Cole name.
She searched the address.
The result led her to an old company that had once operated under Cole Enterprises. According to the business records, it had closed years ago.
Elena leaned back in her chair.
Why had Adrian been there?
She looked at Clara again.
There was nothing romantic about the photograph. If anything, the two of them looked as though they were waiting for someone.
That should have reassured her.
Instead, it raised another question.
Who were they waiting for?
Her phone rang.
Adrian.
She answered after the second ring.
"Hello?"
"How are you?"
"I'm fine."
"You don't sound fine."
Elena looked at the photograph on her desk.
"I have a question."
He became quiet.
"About what?"
"Clara."
The pause that followed was brief, but noticeable.
"What about her?"
"When did you first meet her?"
"Years ago. She worked with my father."
"How many years?"
"I don't remember exactly."
Elena frowned.
"You don't remember?"
"Elena, why are you asking me this?"
She could have told him about the photograph.
Instead, she chose a safer question.
"Is there something about Clara I should know?"
"No."
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly for her liking.
"Then why does it feel like there is?"
Adrian sighed.
"Because there are things I haven't explained properly."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Are you going to?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Tonight."
She almost asked him why he couldn't tell her over the phone. Instead, she agreed.
After the call ended, she placed her phone beside the photograph.
She had known Adrian long enough to recognize when he was avoiding a subject.
This wasn't simply about Clara.
Something larger was sitting underneath it.
---
The next message arrived shortly after lunch.
You are asking the wrong question.
Elena read it without replying.
Another message appeared.
The woman isn't the secret.
She typed:
Then what is?
This time, the response took longer.
Why Adrian was looking for you.
Elena stopped what she was doing.
She had never told anyone that Adrian had known her name before they met. She hadn't even told her mother.
How could a stranger know what she had been asking him?
She typed again.
What do you know about Adrian?
There was no immediate response.
Instead, a photograph appeared.
Elena opened it and recognized herself.
It had been taken nearly five years earlier at a charity event. She remembered the evening clearly because she had attended with her mother and left earlier than planned.
The photograph had been taken from across the room.
Whoever took it had been watching her.
A message followed.
You were already being watched before you met him.
Elena lowered the phone.
The photograph changed the situation completely.
Until that moment, she had assumed someone was trying to create suspicion around her husband. Now she had to consider something far more disturbing.
What if Adrian hadn't been the first person interested in finding her?
What if someone had been watching her before he ever entered her life?
---
Elena left work earlier than usual.
She didn't call Adrian to tell him she was coming home. She needed time alone with her thoughts before their conversation that evening.
In the bedroom, she opened the drawer where they kept old photographs and documents.
She wasn't looking for anything specific. She simply wanted to remind herself of the life she had built with Adrian before someone else's messages had made her question every part of it.
She found photographs from the early years of their relationship.
Their first holiday together.
A dinner with friends.
Her birthday.
Their wedding.
She stopped at the wedding photograph.
The memory came back easily.
Adrian had looked nervous that morning, although he would never admit it. When she had walked toward him, everything else seemed to disappear. She remembered the way he had looked at her and the certainty she had felt when she placed her hand in his.
Nothing about that moment had felt calculated.
That was what made the questions so painful.
She placed the photograph aside and noticed another picture underneath it.
She pulled it out.
It was the same photograph she had received anonymously.
Adrian and Clara stood outside the old Cole building.
Elena turned it over.
The message from the stranger wasn't there.
Instead, there was handwriting across the back.
Ask Adrian why he was looking for you.
She studied the ink.
It wasn't fresh.
The handwriting appeared faded, as though the words had been there for years.
Someone had written the message long before she received the anonymous texts.
That realization unsettled her more than the messages themselves.
The photograph had been kept somewhere.
Someone had deliberately preserved it.
And whoever had done so had known that Adrian was connected to Elena before Elena ever discovered the connection herself.
She turned the photograph over again and examined the background.
There was someone standing several feet behind Adrian and Clara.
The person's face was partly hidden by the building, but the coat was visible.
Elena knew that coat.
She had seen it in one of her father's old photographs.
Her attention shifted to the date printed beneath the image.
March 14.
She knew that date too.
It was the day she had first met Adrian.
Elena sat down on the edge of the bed.
That couldn't be a coincidence.
The photograph had been taken seven years ago, yet somehow it carried the date associated with the beginning of her relationship with Adrian.
Perhaps the date had been added later.
Perhaps someone had altered the photograph.
She was still examining it when she heard the front door open downstairs.
Adrian was home.
Elena slipped the photograph back into the drawer and closed it before he entered the bedroom.
He appeared a few moments later, his expression tired.
His eyes moved briefly toward the drawer.
"Did you find something?"
The question caught her off guard.
"Why would you think I found something?"
He looked at her for a moment before answering.
"Because you don't usually go through those things unless something is bothering you."
Elena picked up her phone.
"Do you know me that well?"
"I'd like to think so."
She looked at him.
"Then you should know that I don't like being lied to."
His expression tightened.
"I know."
She waited for an explanation.
None came.
That night, Adrian fell asleep beside her, but Elena remained awake.
When she was certain he was asleep, she quietly returned to the drawer and took out the photograph.
She examined the faded writing once more.
There was something beneath the first sentence that she hadn't noticed before.
She moved closer to the lamp.
The faint handwriting became easier to read.
Ask Adrian why he was looking for you.
And beneath it, almost hidden by the faded ink, were three additional words.
He knew you.
Elena looked at the photograph for a long time.
Seven years ago, Adrian had been standing outside a Cole building with Clara.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone had written a message about Elena on the back of the photograph.
And the date connected the photograph to the day Elena believed she had first met her husband.
She had spent three years believing their love story began when Adrian walked into her life.
Now she was beginning to wonder whether he had been searching for her long before she ever knew his name.
