The Disavowed Promises

Episode 2 - As the prophecy foretold, the past will haunt her

“I did not inform them! I swear!” Reese insisted while I am busy arranging some juice for our unexpected visitor. I just arrived here, and it looks like everyone was aware of my presence. As much as possible, I do not want any reunion from anyone particularly to his best friend/cousin.

“What brought you here, Kade?” I asked while I offer him the juice I made. “I’m sorry I just arrived early this morning so I cannot offer something else.”

“You ran away, little girl.” He said and I was surprised when he suddenly offers his hands and when I grab it, he hugged me so tight like there’s no tomorrow. “Get off, De Vera. I can’t breathe!” After letting me go, I sit properly, and Reese signaled that she’ll be in my room to give us some privacy.

“What do you really need from me?”

“I just want to see the influence of Europe to Calliope Everleigh Cuerva.”

“Stop beating around the bush, Cascade. Why are you here?”

“You changed a lot, Leigh. And I am very much happy for you.”

“But I am sorry to tell you that he needs you.” I stopped for a moment and can’t help but to smirk with his opening statement. “There are so many Doctors out there, and he got the money that he needs for his treatment. Stop bothering me, Cascade.”

“He’s very much dependent to alcohol, Leigh. We can’t stop him because he only wants you. Please” I stared at his eyes and look for any signs of humor but there’s none. “Auntie is willing to kneel before you so you can forgive them. We are very much willing to ask for your forgiveness, Leigh.”

“I am not a f*****g therapist, Cascade. Stop playing around.” I did my best to sound calm because this issue cannot be resolve with a heighten emotion.  

“Leigh, please.” And he kneels in front of me. I forthwith closed my eyes because I cannot withstand him doing such thing. Cascade Isaias De Vera was once my big brother before everything else happened.

“Go back to your sit, Cascade. That position does not suit you.” I said firmly but knowing him, he will do what pleases him.

I do not know what to do with him and thankfully someone rang the doorbell. “Get up before someone else see you in that pathetic position.”

I walked to the entrance door and when I opened the door, some stranger stared at me. “Ah so you’re the engineering team?” I asked politely and the boy behind the man in front of me nod quietly while smiling at me. “Good day, I am Engr. Alexander Fortunato. Nice to meet you Miss Cuerva” he greeted me and offered a hand which I gladly accept.

My older cousin was the one who’s in contact with them that’s why I am not acquainted to them. Well, I heard that ADF firm was good, but I am not sure about the other details of their business background.

“Come in!” I invited them and at the same time I was confused where was Louisiana? Well, maybe Tito Leandro called her, or Louis did, her older brother.

Kade was already standing and ready to bid his goodbye. Gladly, Reese came out and I signaled her to take care of Kade because I need to accommodate the Engineering team.

“You came early than expected.” I commented.

“Well, isn’t it a good thing Miss Cuerva?” What a rough attitude. I just smiled with his answer and allow them to take a look at the house. For the meantime, I planned to live in my house in other subdivision while this ancestral house is under renovation.

“How long will the renovation take place?” I asked because I am afraid it might take a year and hopefully not because I am not willing to stay here for too long.

“Maybe 6 months or over a year since we’re going to perform major changes. And it depends on the modifications necessary to the house such as the suitability of the space.”

I just nodded and allow them to roam all over the house. “I was told by my cousin that I can be in charge of the design, right? I already ask my friend to create a blueprint for the renovation.” I handed him the design made by my friend in Milan.

“This is not plausible, Miss Cuerva.” He did not even look at it and he have the audacity to say that to me. Is he serious? Ah he’s getting into my nerves.

“How come? It has the exact dimension of the lot.”

“There are so many things to consider, Miss Cuerva. I hope you’re aware of it.” I calmed myself before I answered him, but it still sounds like I am a mad woman.

 “Then do what pleases you, Mr. Fortunato. You can call me if there’s anything I can help. I’ll be leaving so I can offer you some refreshments.” I did not wait for his reply because in just a minute or two I won’t be able to hold back. I am too tired of the long drive and here I am dealing with two guys whose giving me headache and too much stress, one after another.

Upon checking the house after a couple of hours, finally the team bid their goodbye. They informed me that after 2 days the renovation will start, several men will come to demolish the old house. Reese already left because she needs to attend some social events and I asked her to stay me out of it. I am not interested in meeting familiar faces in this town. However, I don’t think it’s possible because both of my best friends are part of the social circle in this little town.

I decided to take a look at the house and memorize every part of it. This house means a lot to me. It witnessed how I was born, and it played a big part to my childhood days. However, I refrained myself from reminiscing all the memories with him made in this house.

I am aware that I am not totally over it even after 5 years of running away. I still can’t forget how a man destroyed my life with his irresponsible actions.

Then, evening came. I am laying down in my bed and stare at the glowing stars glued in my ceiling. I was just about to close my eyes when someone rang the doorbell several times. What the hell is this all about? I picked up my robe and walked to the main door. Cascade was in front of our house, drenched in his own sweat. Oh, sorry, he’s wet thoroughly by the rain. I am not aware that its raining.

“It’s past midnight Kade! What do you think you are doing right now? And for Pete’s sake it’s raining.”

“He’s berserk, Leigh. When he learned that you’re here, he totally lost it. I am planning to let him do what he wants to do because I am also embarrassed of disturbing you late at night but he’s literally out of control. He already hurt Alyssa.”

I take a deep breath and relax myself from what I’ve heard. What happened to him, and he even hurt his little sister? “I am sure his mother will be able to fix that matter. I am not interested in meddling with other people’s business.”  

Kade did not persuade me to come with me. I am no longer concerned with his well-being neither his family. I am about to close the gate when I heard a little voice calling my name.

“Ate Leigh”
