Chapter 7: The First Move

1340 Words
Emily didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. Every time she closed her eyes, the words came back. You don’t remember. You were never here by accident. You’re in danger. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at nothing, her mind running in circles she couldn’t escape. “Who am I…?” she whispered. The question felt wrong. Like it didn’t belong to her. Like it had been waiting for a long time. ⸻ Morning came, but the light didn’t bring comfort. The mansion looked the same. Perfect. Silent. Controlled. But now Emily saw it differently. Now she knew— This place wasn’t just a house. It was a cage. ⸻ She walked through the hallway slowly, her steps quieter than usual. Watching. Listening. Feeling. Everything Alexander said… it changed the way she looked at every corner. Every door. Every shadow. “Focus,” she told herself. But it was impossible. Because now, everything mattered. ⸻ “Emily.” She stopped immediately. Not fear this time. Instinct. She turned. Alexander was standing behind her. Of course he was. Always appearing when she least expected it. But something was different now. She didn’t step back. “Good morning,” she said, her voice calm… or at least trying to be. His eyes studied her. Carefully. “You didn’t sleep.” It wasn’t a question. “No,” she admitted. A brief silence passed. Then— “Come with me.” Again, not a request. Emily hesitated for a second. But only a second. Then she followed him. ⸻ They walked through parts of the mansion she hadn’t seen before. Quieter. More isolated. The air felt heavier there. Like those walls held more secrets than the rest. “Where are we going?” she asked. “To somewhere safer,” he replied. That didn’t make her feel better. ⸻ They stopped in front of a large door. Different from the others. Stronger. Reinforced. Alexander placed his hand on a hidden panel. A soft sound clicked. The door opened. Emily’s eyes widened. Inside… It wasn’t a room. It was a control center. Screens. Cameras. Live footage from every part of the mansion. Her chest tightened. “This is how you watch everything…” she murmured. Alexander stepped inside. “Yes.” No hesitation. No denial. Just truth. Emily followed slowly, her eyes scanning the screens. Then— She froze. One of the cameras showed the hallway she had just left. But she wasn’t there anymore. And yet… Someone was. A man. Standing still. Looking directly at the camera. Her breath caught. “Who is that?” she asked quickly. Alexander’s expression darkened. “That’s exactly the problem.” ⸻ Emily stepped closer to the screen. Her heart started racing again. “I’ve never seen him before.” “I know,” Alexander said. “That’s not possible,” she replied. “You said you control everything in this house.” “I do.” “Then how is he here?” Silence. A dangerous one. “Because someone let him in.” ⸻ The words hit hard. Emily turned to him. “Someone… inside?” Alexander didn’t answer directly. But his eyes said enough. Yes. ⸻ Her stomach twisted. “The staff?” she asked. “Maybe.” “Your wife?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. A pause. Too long. Too telling. “That’s not your concern,” he said finally. But his tone had changed. Sharper. Closed. Emily noticed. Of course she did. ⸻ “Then what is my concern?” she asked. Alexander stepped closer to her. Not threatening this time. Focused. “You.” Her breath caught slightly. “You stay here today,” he continued. “You don’t go anywhere alone. You don’t talk to anyone unless I tell you to.” “That sounds like a prison,” she said. “It’s protection.” “Same thing,” she replied. A brief silence. Then— “Not if it keeps you alive.” ⸻ That shut her up. Because again… He wasn’t wrong. ⸻ Emily looked back at the screen. The man was gone now. Just an empty hallway. Like nothing had happened. But she knew better. Something had. ⸻ “Why me?” she asked suddenly. Alexander looked at her. “You keep asking that.” “Because you don’t answer.” A small pause. Then— “Because you’re important.” Her chest tightened. “How?” Another pause. Longer this time. But before he could answer— ⸻ The door suddenly opened. Both of them turned. Clara stood there. But she didn’t look calm anymore. She looked… scared. “Sir,” she said quickly, her voice tense, “there’s a problem.” Alexander’s expression hardened instantly. “What is it?” Clara hesitated. Then— “The lady… she knows.” ⸻ Silence. Heavy. Explosive. Emily felt her heart drop. “She knows what?” she asked. But no one answered her. Alexander was already moving. Fast. Decisive. “Stay here,” he ordered. Emily grabbed his arm without thinking. “No.” He stopped. Looked at her. “You said I’m in danger,” she continued. “Then I’m not staying alone.” Their eyes locked. Tension. Conflict. Something unspoken. Then— “Fine,” he said. “Stay close.” ⸻ They moved quickly through the mansion. Everything felt different now. Not quiet anymore. Not controlled. Now it felt like something was about to break. ⸻ They reached the main hall. And there she was. His wife. Standing in the center. Waiting. ⸻ She looked calm. Elegant. Perfect. But her eyes… Cold. Sharp. And locked directly on Emily. “I was wondering how long it would take,” she said softly. Emily felt her pulse spike. Alexander stepped slightly in front of her. Protective. Subtle. But clear. “What are you talking about?” he asked. The woman smiled. Slowly. Dangerously. “You broke the rules.” Her gaze shifted to Emily. “And so did she.” Emily’s hands tightened. “I didn’t—” “Silence.” One word. Sharp enough to cut. Emily froze. ⸻ The woman walked closer. Step by step. Her heels echoing through the hall. “You were told to stay invisible,” she said. Emily swallowed. “I am just doing my job—” “Are you?” she interrupted. Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Because from what I see…” She stopped right in front of her. Too close. Always too close. “…you’ve become something else.” Emily’s breath caught. Something in the air shifted. Dark. Dangerous. Unstable. ⸻ “Enough,” Alexander said coldly. The woman looked at him. And smiled. But it wasn’t warm. Not even close. “You’re protecting her,” she said. Not a question. A fact. “And you’re overstepping,” he replied. Their eyes locked. And this time… There was no pretending. No masks. Just tension. Real. Deep. Explosive. ⸻ “Do you even know what she is?” the woman asked. Emily felt her heart stop. “What she is…?” she repeated softly. Alexander didn’t answer. And that silence— That silence said everything. ⸻ The woman leaned slightly toward Emily. Her voice dropped to a whisper. Cold. Deadly. “Ask him,” she said. Emily looked at Alexander. Fear creeping in again. “What does she mean…?” He didn’t answer. Not immediately. And that hesitation… Terrified her more than anything else. ⸻ Because for the first time… She realized something worse than being in danger. Something worse than being watched. ⸻ She didn’t know who she was. And maybe… She wasn’t who she thought she was at all. ⸻ The woman smiled again. Slow. Satisfied. “The game,” she said softly, “…is finally getting interesting.” ⸻ And this time— Emily felt it. She wasn’t just trapped in it. She was at the center of it. Whether she wanted to be or not.
