CHAPTER 4: DR. WINSTON

893 Words
AUTHOR’S POV Tristan sat in cold silence inside the suite that had been converted into an ICU for the old madam. It’s been more than 3 years since she developed this heart condition, and she was not getting better. He had exhausted all means, throwing tens of millions at world-class specialists, but her health continued to deteriorate. It was a rare heart condition, leaving them with no other choice but to reach out to Dr. Winston, a world-famous specialist in that medical field. She was their only hope, and after weeks of silence, she had still not given them a reply. “Sir, Dr. Winston's team just reached out,” Luke came in and announced, unable to hide his excitement. “She lands in Axel City today and will be at the estate tomorrow morning.” The news came like a shock to Tristan, who had not been expecting a response from Dr. Winston any sooner than he had anticipated “Better late than never. Have her escorted here safely. Grant every demand she makes. No delays” “Understood, sir.” Luke bowed out before leaving Tristan turned back to face his bedridden grandmother, his jaw tight. “Hang on a little longer. You’re going to get better soon” By nine the next morning, the whole family was gathered to welcome the famous Dr. Winston having reportedly rejected several billionaire clients over the years. It was an honor that she finally accepted their requests. “How do we even know this Dr. Winston will be any different from the fraud Doctors you’ve brought in so far, Tristan?” Donald, Tristan’s uncle, crossed his arms, his tone laced with skepticism. “Uncle, you should trust Tristan's judgement. If he has invited her of course he is aware of her capabilities” Lara spoke out, dressed in a pristine white dress that hung to her body she looked Angelic and pleasant to look at “and besides Dr. Winston is one of the most powerful and elusive names in international medicine, renowned for handling complex surgeries, severe trauma and rare cardiac conditions despite keeping her personal life completely in the dark.” Lara explained, having done her research “Trained personally by Professor Alexander Winston, one of the world’s most celebrated physicians, she became his most distinguished protégé and developed an exceptional reputation of her own,” Dr. Henry, the Blackwells’ family physician, explained to the ears of the family “Her qualifications don’t determine whether the old madam would get better. Tristan, would you take responsibility if anything wrong happens?” Hearing the words of his stepmother, Jessica, Tristan could only laugh coldly. Were they trying to get him to step down from his role as the head of the family if Dr. Winston fails? “You all have been conveniently absent throughout this time while she suffered, and you dare question my decision.” his dark eyes locked onto Jessica “Tristan, I understand you are the head of the family, but you should let us have a say in decisions like this, she is my mother too!” Donald scowled “Then start acting like her son,” Tristan spat back “Her expertise in rare heart conditions, including the Progressive Ventricular Synchrony Syndrome that the old madam has, has made her one of the few specialists trusted with cases other doctors consider too dangerous. We should trust her and let her do her duties,” Henry had to explain, sensing the distrust in their tones “Dr. Henry has said it all let’s all give Dr. Winston a chance,” Lara pleaded, giving a warm smile to Tristan to let him know she was on his side. She also needed the old madam to get better, as Tristan had postponed their engagement ceremony several times because of her. “You are not even part of the family yet, who gave you the right to speak? Just sit down and keep your mouth shut,” Jessica snapped, glaring at Lara. Lara bit her lip, her eyes brimming with tears, looking back at Tristan, hoping he would say something. But Tristan didn’t even look at her. He had a distant, cold look as he fixed his gaze on his wristwatch Before Lara could speak again, Jules, the chief housekeeper, entered the room and bowed deeply. “Master Blackwell, Dr. Winston has arrived,” she announced “Lead her in.” Tristan stood up immediately. The grand double doors swung open A woman stepped into the foyer wearing a tailored black trouser suit, tucked in nicely was a crisp white silk blouse, and she had her hair in a sleek, low bun. Oversized designer frames sat on the bridge of her nose, highlighting a set of vivid sea-green eyes. Following closely behind was her assistant, Judy, holding a medical briefcase, flanked by a full surgical team. The air in the room instantly vanished. Tristan’s breath hitched in his throat. The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence as his eyes locked onto the woman’s face. The glasses, the eyes, the sharp posture everything was designed to conceal her, but the bone structure, the subtle tilt of her chin, and the faint scent of hydrangea flowers that followed her…. Tristan involuntarily took a step forward, his voice barely a whisper “E…Emilia?”
