When I knew the human silence was complete, I began my speech in Algonquin: “Friends, these past weeks have seen an unexpected battle on our shores and on this land. We’ve never had such conflict since my grandfather was young and had his strength. Up until now we’ve been told that we live in a land of peace and prosperity, a melting pot of cultures who govern and live in harmony. Some of us—those native to this land—have doubts as to whether we are truly on the right path, and if this new experiment in government can be trusted. However, there are more people coming who are trying to disrupt this way of life even further, and who we know have a history of broken treaties and g******e. These people rule with no regards to the ways or wishes of others.
