The Changing

797 Words
I get dressed and look in the mirror... I'm in my mother and father's old room. It is exactly how I remember it. I straighten up my nice brown dress that comes to my knees, brush my hair out straight so it's long and reaches my lower back tonight. It's time to head downstairs to go. Aunt Lillian is wearing almost the complete opposite of what I am and I feel almost embarrassed. She has a pair of ripped Jeans on and a hoodie and somes sneakers. She grabs an oversized hoodie and hands it to me,      "You might want this, it might get cold," she warns. I throw it on and we head out. It doesn't take long before I smell food in the distance and we see bonfire light ahead in the tree cover. We approached the gathering and there were a few people my aunt's age and a few younger teenagers, But most everyone else was almost 18-25 years old. Girls gathered together. Guys partying. Teens talking about trends and video games. This wasn't anything like I expected. I still feel a bit over dressed though. I can sense someone's eyes on me so I keep looking around, yet I can't see anyone,      "Hello!" Walter shouts to get everyone's attention. The faint party music stops and everyone grows silent. Something I've never seen happen before. He is definitely their leader I can tell.      "We are here to welcome back a member of our group that hasn't been with us in almost 13 years. Her parents were amazing people that we miss dearly. She was moved around alot to keep safe, but we are happy to welcome home Fawn and her aunt Lillian. They've moved into the old yellow place. And tonight we will greet them!"  Everyone starts cheering, clapping, and howling. Aunt Lillian nudges me over to her so I take a few steps over,      "This is a different kind of welcome party, so I want you to be prepared. Walter, the alpha, is going to make everyone here shift tonight for you," she says into my ear.      "It's called the changing," she adds I start to get extremely nervous... I've only recently changed.. the alpha starts howling and the heat is back like the night of zachs party. I look around to see people embracing it and running away, as clothes fly off body parts shift and morph. I try to not resist it this time. Last time I did and maybe that's why I had so much trouble.  I hear fox howling and yelping all around me, and I can understand them. All.  I see that I have changed in a matter of minutes compared to last time. Foxes come up to great and sniff around me. Then it hits. The most amazing feeling and sensation of warmth and security. I don't know why I feel so calm. I look around to see if people have left and the crowd has gotten smaller, but it hasn't. I decide I want to take a look at the property since I've never really been in Oregon and even though they say I've been here I can't remember anything. I decide to trot off when no one is looking and roam around. I see a few stray foxes here and there, but then I hit a sent. Something that just drives my inner fox insane. I let my nose lead me to the main lodge. Everyone tonight has morphed into their fox because of the alpha's howl so it is not odd I'm entering this way. I follow the scent until I lose it when I walk next to the ashy fireplace. Not only does it kill the scent trail I was following, but it's warming me up. I had no idea how cold I was. I decide to curl up by the fire and close my eyes to relax.  I wake up to someone sniffing me. I have no Idea how long I've been asleep. I snap my neck over to the left quickly when I notice another fox sniffing me. I Jump up and back. The other fox tilts its head at me. I can't tell if it's a boy or girl since it hasn't yipped at me yet. But it smells sweet and warm. I'm not sure who it is, but I can tell they won't cause harm at least. Either of them wont. I notice I've been there a while and maybe they stay here at the lodge like Walter mentioned. I decide to get up and leave the two of them and head home. I'm exhausted after all this shifting and exploring I'm ways I never thought possible. I fall asleep on the front porch since I don't know how to shift back. I end up passing out on the porch.
