Chapter 12: Lover or Fighter The hum of conversation filled the canteen as students regrouped, their chatter blending with the clinking of trays and the occasional burst of laughter. Don sat at a table with his friends Marcus, James, Theo, and Liam, but while they were caught up in the excitement of the upcoming semester, his mind was elsewhere. “Man, can you believe we’re almost done with this place?” Marcus said, leaning back in his chair. “One more semester and we’re free.” “Free to do what, though?” James quipped. “Stress over bills and jobs instead of exams and deadlines?” The table laughed, but Don barely reacted. He stared at his plate, pushing around a piece of bread, his thoughts a million miles away. Theo noticed and nudged him. “Earth to Don? You good, man?” Don blinked, finally looking up. “Huh? Yeah, I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine,” Liam added. “What’s going on with you? You’ve been weird ever since the break started.” Don hesitated for a moment before sighing. “I’ve been thinking... about Anita.” At the mention of her name, his friends exchanged glances. They all knew about his crush on Anita and the sting of rejection he’d faced. “What about her?” Marcus asked cautiously. “I want to try again,” Don said, his voice resolute. “I know she said no, but I think... I think I can change her mind.” “Dude,” James said, raising an eyebrow. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? She seemed pretty clear.” “Yeah, but I wasn’t clear enough,” Don countered. “I didn’t show her how serious I am. I need to make her see that I’m not just some kid with a crush.” The table fell silent for a moment before Theo leaned in with a smirk. “Well, if you’re serious about this, you’re gonna need a plan. Lucky for you, we’re here to help.” “Yeah,” Marcus chimed in. “We’ve got your back, man. Whatever it takes.” Don smiled for the first time that day. “Thanks, guys. I’m gonna need all the help I can get.” --- Across town, Anita sat at her desk, her eyes darting to the window every few minutes. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her. It wasn’t the first time she’d felt this way recently, but today it was stronger than ever. Brushing off her unease, she focused on finishing her work. Once her tasks were complete, she approached her boss to request time off to attend Maya’s school event. “It’s a family visiting day, and I’m the only one who can go,” she explained. Her boss, though hesitant, eventually nodded. “Alright, but don’t make it a habit. We’re short-staffed as it is.” “Thank you,” Anita said, relief washing over her. --- Meanwhile, Jacob was grabbing a coffee at a local café when he spotted Ramirez sitting at a nearby table. Their eyes met, and for a moment, neither of them moved. The last time they’d crossed paths, things hadn’t ended well. But this time, something compelled Jacob to approach. “Mind if I join you?” Jacob asked, holding up his cup. Ramirez hesitated before nodding. “Sure.” Jacob slid into the seat across from him, setting his cup on the table. “So... how’s freedom treating you?” “It’s an adjustment,” Ramirez admitted. “But I’m grateful. Anita and Ronald did a lot to help me, and I don’t take that for granted.” Jacob nodded, sipping his coffee. “She’s a good person. Always has been.” They fell into a conversation about their lives, their challenges, and their regrets. Ramirez spoke about his time in jail, the lessons he’d learned, and his plans to start fresh. Jacob, in turn, shared stories about his family, his struggles to balance work and home life, and his worries about Don. By the time they finished their coffee, the tension between them had eased. As they parted ways, Jacob extended a hand. “Take care of yourself, Ramirez.” “You too,” Ramirez replied, shaking his hand firmly. --- At home, Martha and Kayla were busy making plans for Don’s upcoming birthday. “I was thinking we could do it at the lakeside park,” Kayla suggested. “It’s a nice spot, and Don loves the outdoors.” “Sounds perfect,” Martha agreed. “We’ll keep it simple—just family and a few close friends. He doesn’t like big parties anyway.” They started drafting a guest list and planning the menu, their excitement growing as they envisioned the celebration. --- That evening, Anita found herself going through her parents’ old belongings—a box she’d avoided for years. Curiosity had finally gotten the better of her, and as she sifted through photographs, letters, and documents, she uncovered secrets that took her breath away. There were letters from her father, detailing business dealings she hadn’t known about, and a photograph of a woman she didn’t recognize. As she pieced together the fragments, a picture began to form—one that hinted at a side of her father she had never known. --- In the shadows, Boney was plotting his next move. The assassination of the lawyer had sent a clear message, but he wasn’t done yet. Ronald, Ramirez, and Anita were still on his list, and he wouldn’t rest until they were silenced. --- Don, determined to win Anita back, sent her a text inviting her to his birthday party. Don: “Hey, Anita. I’m having a small birthday gathering this weekend. I’d love for you to come.” To his surprise, she agreed. Anita: “Sure, Don. I’ll be there.” Don smiled at his phone, hope flickering in his chest. Maybe, just maybe, he still had a chance. ----- As the days passed, the atmosphere grew increasingly charged with tension and anticipation, as each character faced their unique challenges. Anita found herself immersed in her daily responsibilities, managing work, and caring for her younger siblings. Despite her strong exterior, the secrets she had uncovered from her father’s past weighed heavily on her mind. Each piece of evidence pointed to a more complex family history than she had ever imagined, leaving her with unanswered questions and a growing sense of unease. Meanwhile, Don was equally preoccupied, but his focus was entirely on his heartfelt mission to win Anita’s affection. With the unwavering support of his close friends, Marcus, James, Theo, and Liam, he meticulously worked out every detail of his plan. Late-night brainstorming sessions and candid conversations with his friends strengthened his resolve. Don was determined to show Anita how deeply he cared and how much he believed they could be together, despite her earlier rejection. However, a darker force was quietly brewing in the background. Boney, with his ruthless nature and calculated mind, was ready to take drastic measures to eliminate anyone who had played a role in Ramirez's freedom. His successful assassination of the lawyer was just the beginning of his campaign of vengeance. As he plotted his next moves, Ronald, Ramirez, and Anita remained high on his list of targets. Boney’s methods were cold and precise, making the threat of his next attack a looming shadow over their lives. As the week progressed, their path seemed to intertwine toward an inevitable collision. Anita, burdened by newfound family revelations, continued to try balancing her personal struggles with her role as the protector of her siblings. Don, steadfast in his determination, focused all his energy on creating the perfect opportunity to express his feelings to Anita once more. And in the shadows. Boney’s dangerous plans threatened to shatter the fragile stability they had begun to rebuild. The stage was set for a turning point, and the stakes had never been higher.
