Chapter Nineteen – Atlas

761 Words
The staircase spiraled deep beneath the warehouse. Each step echoed through the darkness as Emily led with her flashlight while Walker covered the rear. Victoria walked beside Luca, her eyes fixed on the old stone walls. "This place is older than the warehouse," Emily whispered. Victoria nodded. "My father always said New York was built on forgotten secrets." The staircase finally ended at a thick steel door. A tarnished bronze plaque was bolted to the wall beside it. ATLAS No lock. No keypad. Only a small handprint carved into the metal. Walker frowned. "What kind of security system is this?" Victoria slowly raised her hand. "My father's." She placed her palm over the engraving. Nothing happened. Emily stepped closer, examining the door with her flashlight. "Look." A tiny inscription ran along the edge of the frame. Blood remembers what history forgets. Victoria repeated the words quietly. "I've heard that before." "My father used to say it to me..." "...and Gabriel." Silence settled over the group. Emily glanced at Victoria. "Try again." Victoria took a deep breath and pressed harder against the handprint. A loud metallic click echoed through the chamber. The massive door slowly slid open. Cold air rushed out. Inside was a vast underground vault. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with old ledgers, photographs, hard drives, and locked metal cases. In the center stood a large oak table. On it rested a single leather folder. Victoria approached carefully. Written across the front were two words. Project Atlas. She opened it. The first page contained a handwritten letter. To my daughter, If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect our family. Victoria's hands trembled. Emily remained silent, giving her space to read. Atlas was never about money or power. It is a list. A list of every politician, judge, police commander and business leader secretly controlled by Adrian Volkov. Emily's eyes widened. Walker stepped closer. "That's impossible." Victoria turned another page. Photographs. Bank records. Secret payments. Names. Hundreds of names. "If this is real..." Walker whispered. "...it could destroy half the city's criminal network." "And expose half the city's corruption," Emily added. Victoria kept reading. Then she froze. There was one final note. Trust no one. Not even those wearing a badge. Emily noticed the expression on Victoria's face. "What is it?" Victoria slowly handed her the letter. Emily read the last lines twice. A chill ran down her spine. Behind them... A faint noise echoed through the tunnel. Luca immediately drew his pistol. "Did you hear that?" Walker switched off his flashlight. Everyone stood perfectly still. Footsteps. Someone was descending the staircase. Slowly. Deliberately. "They found us," Luca whispered. Walker motioned toward the shelves. "Take cover." Within seconds the room fell silent again. Emily and Victoria hid behind opposite bookcases. Walker and the FBI agents covered the entrance. The footsteps stopped outside the vault. A familiar voice echoed through the darkness. "I know you're in there." Volkov. He sounded almost amused. "You've found exactly what I wanted you to find." Victoria tightened her grip on her pistol. Emily caught her eye across the room. Neither needed to speak. They both knew this wasn't a coincidence. The vault door slowly opened. Volkov stepped inside alone. He wasn't carrying a weapon. Only a cane with a silver snake carved into its handle. He smiled as his eyes swept across the room. "Beautiful, isn't it?" Walker stepped out from cover. "Don't move!" Volkov ignored him. He looked only at Victoria. "Your father always did enjoy collecting evidence." Victoria's voice was ice cold. "You killed him because of this." Volkov shrugged. "He refused to give it to me." Emily stepped forward. "It's over, Volkov." He laughed softly. "No, Agent Carter." He looked around the vault. "This..." "...is only the beginning." Without warning, the lights went out. The room plunged into darkness. A deafening alarm echoed through the underground chamber. Red emergency lights flickered on. The steel vault door began to close automatically. Walker shouted, "Stop that door!" Everyone rushed toward the entrance. Too late. The massive steel door slammed shut with a thunderous crash. The vault had become a prison. Then a mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers. Security Protocol Atlas Activated. Vault Lockdown: Twenty Minutes. Emily stared at the sealed entrance. "We're trapped." Volkov smiled in the flashing red light. "Exactly where I wanted us." He slowly raised his cane. The silver handle twisted open. Hidden inside... Was a long, razor-sharp blade. Victoria stepped in front of Emily without hesitation. The room fell silent. The countdown had begun.
