Chapter Twenty-One – The Call

870 Words
The abandoned subway station was silent. Only the distant rumble of trains echoed through the old tunnels as Victoria stood motionless, staring at the phone in Emily's hand. "He's alive..." She could barely force the words out. For twenty years she had mourned her little brother. Now, with a single phone call, everything she believed about her family had been shattered. Emily stepped closer. "What exactly did he say?" Victoria took a slow breath. "He called me... little sister." "And then he hung up." Walker watched her carefully. "Are you certain it was him?" Victoria nodded without hesitation. "I would recognize his voice anywhere." Luca lowered his head. "If Gabriel is alive..." "...then Volkov has been planning this for decades." Back at FBI Headquarters, the atmosphere was tense. Walker gathered a small team inside a secure conference room. The Atlas folder lay open on the table, surrounded by photographs, maps, and intelligence reports. Emily stood beside the window, unable to stop thinking about Victoria. Walker broke the silence. "Until we identify the leak, nobody outside this room knows Atlas exists." The agents nodded. Walker turned to Emily. "You've worked closer with Moretti than anyone." "What do you think?" Emily paused. A week ago the answer would have been simple. Now it wasn't. "I think she's telling the truth." Several agents exchanged surprised glances. Walker studied Emily for a moment. "That wasn't the answer I expected." Emily met his eyes. "I don't trust the head of a crime family." "But I trust a woman who's just discovered her brother is alive." Across the city, Victoria sat alone in Isabella's safe house. She held an old family photograph. She and Gabriel couldn't have been older than six and eight. They were laughing in the garden while their mother watched from a bench. Victoria smiled sadly. "I promised I'd always protect you." A tear rolled down her cheek. "I failed." A soft knock came at the door. Luca entered quietly. "Someone's here to see you." Victoria frowned. "I didn't ask for visitors." "You didn't." Emily stepped into the room. For a second, neither woman spoke. Victoria finally broke the silence. "You shouldn't be here." Emily smiled faintly. "I know." "But I wanted to make sure you were okay." Victoria looked away. "I'm not." Emily nodded. "I wouldn't be either." They walked into the small backyard behind the house. The rain had finally stopped. The evening air was cool, and the sounds of New York felt far away. Emily leaned against the old wooden fence. "My father used to tell me that grief never disappears." Victoria looked toward the sky. "My mother said something similar." Emily smiled. "What did she say?" Victoria closed her eyes, remembering. "'The people we love never truly leave us. They become part of every choice we make.'" Emily remained silent. "She sounds like she was kind." "She was." Victoria's voice softened. "Everything changed after she died." Emily looked at her. "So did my life after my father died." For the first time, they realized just how much they had in common. Different lives. The same wounds. Suddenly, Emily's phone vibrated. Walker. She answered immediately. "Carter." "We've got a problem." "What happened?" Walker sounded grim. "One of the names from Atlas is dead." Emily frowned. "Volkov?" "No." "The judge who was going to testify against him." Emily's heart sank. "So he's cleaning up." "Exactly." Walker paused. "And there's more." "We found evidence that someone inside the Bureau deleted surveillance footage from the docks." Emily looked toward Victoria. The leak wasn't just possible anymore. It was real. Later that night... Volkov stood inside an abandoned theater. Gabriel entered, carrying a folder. "They found Atlas." Volkov smiled. "I expected they would." Gabriel folded his arms. "Why haven't you killed Victoria?" Volkov walked slowly across the empty stage. "Because dead enemies inspire revenge." He stopped beneath a single spotlight. "But living enemies..." "...make mistakes." Gabriel remained silent. Volkov looked at him. "When the time comes..." "...your sister will have to choose." "Her empire..." "...or you." Gabriel's expression darkened. "And if she chooses me?" Volkov's smile disappeared. "Then she loses everything else." Back at the safe house... Emily prepared to leave. Victoria walked her to the front door. "I don't know when we'll see each other again," Emily admitted. Victoria smiled sadly. "Probably sooner than we'd like." Emily laughed quietly. "You're probably right." For a long moment, neither moved. Neither wanted to say goodbye. Finally, Emily held out her hand. Victoria looked at it... Then ignored it completely. Instead, she stepped forward and wrapped Emily in a brief, unexpected hug. Emily froze in surprise. After a second, she hugged her back. Neither woman wanted to let go first. When they finally stepped apart, both were smiling. It wasn't romantic. Not yet. But it was the first time either of them had allowed someone inside the walls they had built around themselves. Neither of them noticed the camera hidden across the street. A photographer lowered his lens and sent the images to Adrian Volkov. He looked at the photographs with satisfaction. "They're getting closer." He slowly folded the pictures and slipped them into his pocket. "Perfect." "Now..." "...it's time to make them doubt each other."
