Chapter 8: The Lock That Changed

414 Words
I tried to move on like it hadn’t happened. Like Leo hadn’t slipped into my life, my job, my relationship. But everything around me had changed. I returned to the care home a week later—no deal, no plan, just the faded hope of reclaiming normal. I walked up to the front gate, nodded to the receptionist. Her smile was polite, but uncertain. "You’re not scheduled for today," she said. "I’m just visiting," I lied. Inside, the halls looked the same, but felt colder. The residents who once called my name didn’t turn to wave. A few smiled vaguely, but without recognition. In the lounge, Leo sat between two elderly patients, painting. His back was to me. Claire stood nearby, reviewing shots on her camera. She didn’t see me. I turned away before they could. That night, I returned home—only to find my key didn’t work. I jiggled it in the lock. Nothing. I tried again, slower. Still stuck. Had the lock been changed? A neighbor poked their head out. “Looking for someone?” “No, this is my apartment.” They looked me over, uncertain. “Haven’t seen you around in a while.” I didn’t answer. My chest hollowed with panic. I called Claire. No answer. I tried again. Still nothing. I sat on the steps for an hour, staring at my phone, at the blank door, at the pieces of a life that no longer opened for me. And just when I thought the night had finished unraveling me, I saw movement on the stairs above. Claire. She froze when she saw me, keys in hand, a grocery bag hanging from her wrist. “You changed the locks?” I asked, my voice rough. “I thought you wouldn’t come back,” she said. Her eyes darted, nervous, like she was preparing for a scene. “You didn’t even ask.” “I didn’t know how,” she admitted. “And Leo... he’s been living here. It didn’t make sense to leave it like before.” “So you made that decision for both of us?” Claire didn’t answer. A moment passed. Then she whispered, “Do you want to come in?” I stared at the door, then back at her. “No,” I said quietly. “I don’t think I belong here anymore.” She stepped aside, letting the door close slowly between us. And this time, I didn’t try to stop it.
