CHAPTER 24 AT ELEVEN IN the evening, my phone buzzed with an email. I rolled sideways to the nightstand and pressed my thumb to the fingerprint scanner, but nothing happened, probably because my hands were all pruney. Joe had kept me naked in the hot tub for over two hours, even while we ate the selection of desserts I’d ordered from room service. “I should sell my apartment and buy a house,” I told him. “Then we could put one of these in the garden.” He’d laughed and nuzzled my ear. “We can make do in the shower.” I’d been joking when I said it, but the heaviness I felt in my stomach at the thought of going back to Heron Court was all too serious.
