Chapter 17
POV: Johnathan
I made sure to avoid Elizabeth for the next few days. I can't believe I kissed her. What came over me?!
She's beautiful, but she's not my mate. A wolf and a witch can't be mates, it hasn't ever happened. Well, the first wolf was but he was human when they mated.
I wasn't usually against being with women, h*ll I had been with many women. But it was different with Elizabeth. She was so sweet I didn't want to hurt her….
I focused on running the pack and focusing on security and plans for the fall festival in a week. Fall festival was my favorite.
We were known for our celebration and many other packs came to visit us during the week so we had to be on top of security.
We had a few human vendors coming too, not all humans were in the dark about our existence. Some were mated to wolves that choose to live in the human world. The didn't renounce their pack so they weren't rouges.
But with all the new people we had plenty of need for security and plenty of paperwork for traveling pack members. It was also up to me to go over all those who wished to be vendors and approve or deny them.
The vendors would be active 7am-7pm for the entire week. The only feast was on Sunday night, however the pack house kitchen would be running 24/7. We charged a admission fee for each meal.
The omegas has also been working on fall crafts for the whole year in preparation. Handmade blankets, scarves, hats, and other trinkets.
The money the pack made from this festival is almost half of all our earnings for the whole year. So financially it was a big deal. My father had left me to basically do all of it. I would even have to welcome the alphas, with him there of course. It would be quite an insult for the acting alpha to not welcome incoming alphas even though we were in transition.
Friday night I wasn't able to sleep. My wolf was very restless. With the festival so soon I hadn't had much time to run.
I decided to go out and run through the forest.
I changed quickly once I got to the forest and ran as fast as I could. I didn't have any direction, I was just running. My wolf was enjoying being out finally.
As I was running I noticed a couple of clouds in the sky. Almost as I noticed them it began to sprinkle. Within a minute it was raining so hard I was soaked to the bone.
I began to head back to the pack house. It was dark before the storm hit, but now even with my wolf sight it was almost pitch black. Thunder and lightning began, it was deafeningly loud…. I pushed myself faster. I saw the lights of the pack house in through the trees and slowed a little. As I broke through the treeline I noticed someone out on the balcony.
It was Elizabeth. It looked like she was yelling something…. I tried to get closer without her seeing me. She was illuminated by the bedroom lights. She was lucky there was no wind and the rain was just pouring straight down, else her whole room would have been soaked with how hard it was raining.
I stood there and watched her in the distance for just a minute. Even from this distance I could see the sorrow on her face…. I wanted to comfort her…..
Another loud bit of thunder pulled me out of my thoughts, I quickly ran inside. I changed right before going inside and grabbed a spare pair of shorts I keep by the back door just for this occasion.
I went inside and found my father sitting at the bar In the kitchen eating something.
"Johnathan," he said, not looking up. "Just the man I wanted to see. We should talk about your fiance. I have something I wanted to talk to you about."
I went over and sat at the bar stool next to him.
He finished the toast on his plate then finally looked at me.
"Do you know why you're engaged to Elizabeth?" He asked. He had dropped his voice low, probably so anyone near couldn't hear us.
"Well our people haven't gotten along in a while, we have the standing order to ki** any witch on sight. It's to end that and open up trade with their people?" I said, also in a quiet voice.
"Witches have oracles that have visions. They tell of all the mate matches, and many other things. Their prophecies are about more than just their people. Some even concern our people. What exactly those are, while not unimportant, are not to be discussed today. Elizabeth's mother reached out to me a little over a year ago. Her people have been expecting her to end the war. They have a well known prophecy that she will do that as the most powerful witch born in a century or something like that.
They think that was her, but her daughter has a strange and powerful magic in her. I've seen it when it's uncontrolled…. It's quite something. Her mother doesn't want to let the coven know about her daughters power for some reason. She wouldn't quite explain it. She seemed to want Elizabeth gone before she could take over the coven. She told me about some of the prophecies about her daughter…
It was soon after that we agreed she could come live here and be part of the pack, and that you two would be wed." He said, speaking quickly and quietly.
"Wait, her mother wanted to get rid of her?" I asked suprised.
"Yes, she was very adiment that Elizabeth come here, and even if the marriage failed she would not return to the coven…." He said, "I tried to reason with her. I tried to get her to agree to Elizabeth visiting or something, anything to not cut her off completely but she wouldn't budge. So finally I agreed."
"And the power Elizabeth has?" I asked. "Is that dangerous?"
"Well, sometimes. She controls it very well most times, you wouldn't even notice it at all. But sometimes, I'm moments of great emotion she can't really control it." He paused as a huge crack of thunder hit. "This storm for example. Her mother reached out to me just a bit before it started to tell me her daughter had sent a message and how that can't happen again. She finally sent a reply to Elizabeth telling her she was no longer a part of the coven, or her daughter."
"The storm is Elizabeth?!" I asked astounded.
"Yes." He said slowly. "I do hope you can help her to see the bright side to being here permanently, else our whole festival may be rained out."
"Why didn't you tell me this before, dad?" I asked.
"Some things, son, are best unknown until later. Somethings are best to learn from someone themselves. But I guessed with the storm it was time you knew at least a little more than Ive told you." He said as he got up. "Get some sleep, I hear you two have a date tomorrow, you should make sure to really spoil her. She deserves someone to care for her."
I sat in the kitchen for a little bit and listened to the pouring rain. She must real be hurting to make such a storm….
Eventually I went up to my room and climbed in bed. I fell into a deep and dreamless sleep.
When I awoke it was just drizzling outside but all of the grounds have been flooded. I mind linked the gamma and asked him to go around and make sure no one in the pack needed anything and to assess any damages that the storm may have caused.
I got dressed quickly and went across the hall. This was going to be the first time I saw her since I kissed her……
I took a breath and knocked on the door.
