CHAPTER 15

POV: Elizabeth

He kissed me with a sudden force. I was so shocked I just stood there for a second, but I began to kiss him back.

He was such a good kisser. We stepped back into the room and he shut the door without ever breaking the kiss. He walked us over the the bed and gently pushed me down on it.

"Wait, Johnathan…." I said, breaking off the kiss. "What are you doing?"

"I uh….. I don't know…" he said sheepishly, kind of looking around. "I couldn't really focus after our conversation earlier and I've just been walking around thinking and I ended up here…."

He started to head to the door, "sorry to interrupt you, I know you're probably in the middle of something. I'll see you Saturday, yeah?"

"Um yeah" I said and he rushed out of the door.

I sat there for a few minutes before flopping back on my bed…. What the heck had just happened? I was laying back on my bed still in a daze when I heard another knock. Maybe it was Johnathan trying to apologize for what happened earlier?

I jumped up and went to open the door, but it was the Luna.

"Elizabeth, I was hoping you'd like to go on a walk with me?" She asked.

"Oh yeah sure just let me get my shoes, you can come in if you'd like.

The Luna stepped into the room and looked around for a minute. "This looks nice." She said.

"Thanks, it reminds me of home." I said as I pulled on my shoes.

We began to walk to the back doors of the pack house and went out towards the garden. We were walking among the flowers at the edge of the maze.

"How was your first day of classes? I know it must be hard to adjust. Probably more than you know. I was a human when I met Jasper. You know." She said finally.

"A human?" I asked surprised.

"Yes, humans don't feel the made bond, and the change to wolf, well it's really hard on humans. We waited almost a year before he marked me and gave me my wolf. The transformation was Terrible. I felt like I wouldn't survive it. A lot of humans don't, but as soon as he marked me I had the connection of the mate bond, which helped a lot" she said

We continued to walk as she paused. "How did you meet?" I asked.

"Well we hold balls every so often for all those who have their first change but haven't met their mate yet. Often there are more than just one pack in attendance. Once a year, there is one huge party with every pack member of every pack 16 and older invited. It's the grand Spring ball. It's quite wonderful.

All the packs together celebrateing our creation. We feast as one, then at midnight we have a run. We all act as one grand pack. It's something.

Well anyway I had heard of a party in this tiny town a few hours from me and me and a friend decided we had to go. We couldn't convince anyone else it was worth going so we got all dressed up and headed out.

We danced and we ate and had a wonderful time. When Jasper saw me he instantly knew. He didn't realize I was human until after he realized I didn't know what a mate was. I had been overwhelmed and confused and ran to the garden, he of course followed. The smell of all the wolves had masked my human scent.

He explained everything to me and I decided to give it a go. We dated for a few months and I knew I loved him very quickly. But he wanted to wait to mark me, that's not able to be undone and he never wanted me to regret anything."

We fell into a comfortable silence as we walked through the garden. Fall was definitely upon us. The sun was beginning to set, and a night wind was starting to blow in gently. I felt the cool breeze on my back and thought of home.

It didn't get overly snowy, and if it did we could simply magic clean the roads and sidewalks. I've heard the winters here were much worse than in my town. I wondered when I would see my home again.

"I hope you are trying your best with my son." She said, "he is very close minded and believes he will find his mate elsewhere. But I know you two are fated Elizabeth. Learn to love him. Learn to care for him. We have always been lucky that the war was more of a passive one, a feud between our people. But if this marriage fails, I assure you we will have a war like none either people have ever seen. It will be more terrible than either people wants."

"We talked today in the woods. We are going to try and get to know each other. You're right Johnathan thinks his mate is out there, but doesn't want to be enemies while I remain here. If he finds his mate and I leave, I won't let my Coven attack yours. You've all shown me such kindness and grace. I'm very well taken care of here." I told her.

She stopped and looked at me. She grabbed both my hands with hers. "Elizabeth, I know you wouldn't. But even if you were to leave right now, your younger sister is going to rule your coven. You'll get no say in it. Your mother was very clear in this. You are no longer heir to the high priestess role…. I'm sorry I thought she had told you."

"Oh…" I said looking at our hands. "Maybe she was meaning to tell me when I returned for the Yule ball? This Christmas." I said. My heart felt suddenly heavy. I couldn't believe my mom would make such decisions without me. I could just not believe she would strip me of my birthright without at least telling me.

"Elizabeth….. you are here now. This is your home. The only reason for you to return to your former coven is if the marriage does not happen." She said very quietly.

My heart felt like it was breaking. Had she really done this to me? I needed to talk to her. I pulled my hands from hers gently and smiled at the Luna. "Oh. Of course what was I thinking?" I turned towards the sunset and faked a shiver. "It's getting cold though, I think I will head back. I have an early morning tomorrow as well. Thank you for the walk. I enjoyed your company very much."

With that I turned around and walked as fast as I could back to the pack house.

When I got to my door I burst in and slammed it shut behind me. I went over to my desk and wrote a letter quickly.

Mother,

I was just talking with the Luna and was surprised to hear there had been no plans for me to return for the Yule ball. I thought we had talked about me returning so we can announce the engagement to the coven. Johnathan is certain I am not his mate. If he finds his mate, and it is not me, how will we situate my return? I do not wish to be a burden here too long if that becomes the case. How has Rebecca's training come along to take over the coven? I am sure she will do amazing.

I read over the note a few times and when I was finished I rolled it up and went to my work bench. I took my cauldron out and a black candle. I grabbed a few bottles of herbs. I lit the candle quickly with magic. And placed it burning side down into the cauldron. I threw some herbs on it.

She would get the letter soon. Now I just needed to wait. I wanted to feel the fresh air on my skin so I opened the double doors to my balcony.

When I saw what was there I instantly felt sick. A poor little forest fox. Laying unmoving on the balcony. It had been stabbed. The knife still in the poor animal. Between the hilt of the blade and the fox was a piece of paper. It was blood stained on the edges.

I slowly walked to it and pulled out the dagger, and I read the paper.

END THE ENGAGEMENT

LEAVE NOW. BEFORE YOU TAKE THE FOX'S PLACE

I felt a tear slide down my face. This poor creature. K***ed just to get a reaction out of me. I grabbed a small box from my room and placed the animal gently inside.

I headed to the edge of the forest and buried the animal.

I went back into my room and burned the note and washed away the blood.

I wouldn't let whoever did this get a reaction from me.
