Peter replaced the phone and tried to fathom what was happening. The FBI men had not mentioned Carlos, but either he or Mark must have alerted them. Carlos had not returned and had sent no messages. The FBI response was underwhelming, and no local police were involved. After he failed to return from the drop point with her son, Pam had disappeared into the den and closed the door, apparently no longer speaking to him.
He thought about calling the FBI to tell them of the phone call, but decided Pam could do this while he, with Kayten’s help, acted. He had to verify the new information on Dan’s location. Part of him said it was a red herring; another part decided to trade himself for his son.
