Peter, Dan, and Kayten were given the okay to leave and piled into the Jeep for the trip back to the United States. They were followed by a Suburban with two armed agents. The girls drove back in the Escort accompanied by another FBI car. Kayten’s self-repair allowed him to move with robotic stiffness. The FBI arranged for Peter to claim that Kayten was the kidnap victim who’d been smuggled into Mexico and held in cramped quarters; a story that also explained the android’s stiff movement. The immigration agent was skeptical and remained so even after speaking to the local FBI Bureau Chief and a State Department undersecretary, but in the end waived the party through. Dan used his own passport.
