26 INTERVENTION
Peter took a personal day on Wednesday. From the breakfast nook, he watched sparrows and finches fuss at the bird feeder as he once again pondered what he proposed to do. Dan was feigning a measure of compliance after the car accident and positive drug test. He’d gone to several counseling sessions, but his counselor labeled him “noncompliant.”
The failure of outpatient therapy hardly surprised Peter. An inpatient rehabilitation program could be tried, but Marcia’s son had done more than one such program and now was dead. He thought of his brother’s death from a drug overdose. He’d attended both funerals. Marcia was so distraught she couldn’t speak, and he’d been able only to look on in sympathy.
