19 DINNER Carlos hit the freeway, fighting the California haze and setting sun in his windshield en route to Mathilda’s Levee. Thirty minutes later, he pulled into the lot to find Antoinette Marino in a cream-colored blouse and dark skirt leaning against her small car. She looked even better than her black-and-white photo. Sunlight glistened off large gold earrings that drew attention to a classic Mediterranean face, oval and olive-skinned with a smooth complexion and suspicious brown eyes.
