21 TWO SCHEMES Peter went to the bar and poured about an inch of mahogany liquid. In his favorite chair, he found himself thinking about the time he and Dan had gone on a camping trip when the boy was about nine. Daylight had begun to fade, and the temperature had dropped by the time they found the campsite. Together they managed to erect a small tent in a light rain. The meal of beans and franks tasted great, and the tent kept them warm and dry. Afterwards, they played the card game radio rummy for an hour before turning in. The next day, sunny and warm, they’d spent fishing, caught half a dozen bass, and had a wonderful time. Peter regretted there weren’t more great father-son times in recent years. His son was no academic performer, at least not of late, but had accomplishments
