Chapter 2

I said I could wait. The manager gave me an awkward look. "Miss, Jay's probably going to be tied up for a while. To not ruin your experience, how about I set you up with someone else?" I wanted to refuse. "You don't need to top up. Just order some snacks and drinks." I still had credit left from before, so I reluctantly agreed. The new guy looked like a younger version of Jay—fair-skinned, tall, and lean, like a college student. Seeming to notice my lack of interest, Larry Quinn smiled and teased, "You really like Jay that much, huh?" I nodded. I didn't hide how I felt about him. "But a lot of girls like him like that. Do you know who he's with right now?" I shook my head. "Jay and I are coworkers, so I probably shouldn't be telling you this—it makes me look like I'm stabbing him in the back. But I've watched you a few times now. You're different from the other female customers here. You're innocent, and you don't belong in a place like this. I don't want to see you get in too deep. The woman Jay's with now is a regular here, a wealthy woman. She's already spent millions on him. She was even going to divorce her husband for him. She's only been coming less lately because of the divorce drama. But today she came in and dropped a hundred grand straight. Do you really think you'll have a chance?" "I see. Thank you for telling me." I stared in a certain direction, my gaze resolute. "But opportunities are created. Who can say what the future holds?" Larry was speechless. He'd probably never met such a hopeless romantic. But then I saw Jay's wealthy woman. I witnessed another hopeless romantic. That day, Larry was still chatting and drinking with me. All of a sudden, I heard a commotion outside, along with shouting. The voices sounded familiar. I opened the door to take a look and saw blood all over Jay's white shirt. Opposite him, a big-built woman was holding a knife, swinging it wildly at him with a crazed look. Like something out of a cheesy romance novel, I didn't think twice before stepping in front of him. "What are you doing? Killing someone is against the law!" The woman was startled to see me, then pointed the knife at me and demanded, "Jay, who is she? Did you find yourself a new wealthy woman?" Only then did I notice that her wrist was bleeding. The blood on the knife was from her own slashed wrist. My mind went blank. I suddenly couldn't move. "I don't have money anymore, so you found someone new right away? Jay, you have no heart." The woman was trembling, the knife shaking in her hand, tears streaming down her face. She looked so pitiful. Jay pulled me behind him, his height completely shielding me. I heard him say gently, "Ma'am, how can you think that? Whether you have money or not, you'll always be my favorite sister." "Just your sister? So all those things you said before were lies? Didn't you say that once you made enough money, we'd settle down together? You only saw me as a sister?" "Of course my promises were serious, but I haven't made enough money yet, have I? I know times are tough for you now, ma'am. I just hope you'll take care of yourself and not hurt yourself." The woman laughed. "Jay, that's easy for you to say. I spent at least five million on you, and you tell me you haven't made any money? You tell me you only see me as a sister? And her, what is she to you? You're even protecting her!" She came for me, and I was completely stunned. Just then, the security guards arrived and dragged her out. It wasn't a graceful exit. As she was taken away, she screamed like a curse, "Jay, you heartless bastard. I hope you never find true love! And you, girl, don't think you're special to him. That guy only loves himself. You'll end up just like me, abandoned and broken!" 'No, I won't. I'm different from you,' I thought to myself. 'Because I'm a different kind of hopeless romantic. Because the person I like isn't him.'
