Chapter 20

1547 Words
"Let's cut the bullshit, shall we?" Marco Russo's voice was cold as steel as he settled into the armchair, his eyes never leaving Luca's face. "You've caused me quite a bit of trouble, Moretti." Luca remained standing, his body tense like a coiled spring. "The feeling's mutual, old man." Sofia stood between them, her heart racing. She could feel the tension crackling in the air, thick enough to cut with a knife. "Both of you, please," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "We need to talk this out." Marco's eyes flicked to his daughter, a sardonic smile playing at his lips. "Talk? And what exactly do you think there is to discuss, cara mia? The fact that you've betrayed your family for this... thug?" Sofia felt Luca stiffen behind her, could almost feel the anger radiating off him in waves. She reached back, her hand finding his, squeezing gently. A silent reminder: stay calm. "I haven't betrayed anyone," Sofia said, meeting her father's gaze steadily. "I'm trying to stop this war before more people get hurt. Before you destroy everything you've built." Marco leaned back, his eyes narrowing. "And what makes you think I haven't already won? Luca's empire is in shambles, his reputation ruined. It's only a matter of time before the other families turn on him." "You're bluffing," Luca growled, taking a step forward. Sofia tightened her grip on his hand, holding him back. "Am I?" Marco's smile was cold. "Perhaps you should check the news, Moretti. Your own lieutenants are turning themselves in, eager to make deals. Your legitimate businesses are being raided as we speak. You're finished." Sofia felt her stomach drop. She knew her father was cunning, but this... this was beyond anything she had imagined. She turned to Luca, saw the shock and fury warring in his eyes. "It's not over," she said fiercely, as much to Luca as to her father. "We can still fix this." Marco laughed, a harsh, mirthless sound. "Fix it? Oh, my naive little girl. There's only one way this ends, and we all know it." His hand moved, lightning-fast, reaching into his jacket. Sofia's heart stopped as she saw the glint of metal. But Luca was faster. In a blur of motion, he had Sofia behind him, his own gun trained on Marco's head. "Drop it," he snarled. For a long, tense moment, no one moved. Sofia held her breath, her mind racing. This couldn't be happening. She couldn't lose them both, not like this. Then, slowly, Marco lowered his hand. But instead of a gun, he held out a flash drive. "Perhaps," he said, his voice eerily calm, "we can come to an arrangement after all." Sofia's eyes widened as understanding dawned. "The evidence," she breathed. "You have proof of your own crimes." Marco nodded, his eyes never leaving Luca's face. "Insurance, you might say. Every dirty deal, every bribe, every murder. Enough to bring down half the families in the country." Luca's gun didn't waver. "And why would you give that to us?" "Because," Marco said, his voice suddenly tired, "I'm old, Moretti. This game... it's for the young. And as much as it pains me to admit it, you two make a formidable team." Sofia felt a rush of emotions - shock, disbelief, and something that felt dangerously like hope. "Dad," she said softly, "what are you saying?" Marco's eyes met hers, and for a moment, Sofia saw a glimpse of the father she remembered from her childhood. "I'm saying, cara mia, that perhaps it's time for a changing of the guard. On one condition." "Name it," Luca said, his voice tight with suspicion. "You protect her," Marco said, his gaze boring into Luca's. "You keep her safe, keep her out of this life as much as possible. You give her the future I couldn't." Sofia felt tears prick at her eyes. After everything, after all the pain and betrayal, her father still cared. In his own twisted way, he was trying to protect her. Luca was silent for a long moment, his eyes never leaving Marco's face. Then, slowly, he lowered his gun. "You have my word," he said solemnly. Marco nodded, a wry smile twisting his lips. "Then I suppose this is goodbye, for now. Use the information wisely, Moretti. And Sofia..." His eyes softened as he looked at his daughter. "I'm sorry. For everything." With that, he stood, straightening his jacket. "I'll show myself out. I trust you can handle the cleanup from here." As the door closed behind Marco, Sofia felt her legs give out. She sank onto the couch, her mind reeling. Luca was at her side in an instant, his arm around her shoulders. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, his voice gentle in a way she'd never heard before. Sofia nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She leaned into Luca's embrace, drawing strength from his solid presence. For a long moment, they sat in silence, the weight of everything that had happened settling over them. Then, slowly, Sofia raised her head to meet Luca's gaze. The look in his eyes took her breath away. Gone was the hardened don, the ruthless businessman. In his place was just Luca - vulnerable, caring, and looking at her like she was the most precious thing in the world. "Luca," she breathed, her heart pounding. He cupped her face in his hands, his touch achingly gentle. "Sofia," he murmured, "I..." And then he was kissing her, and the world fell away. This wasn't like their previous kisses - frantic, desperate, stolen in moments of danger. This was slow, deep, full of unspoken emotions and promises. Sofia lost herself in the kiss, in the feel of Luca's body against hers. Her hands roamed his back, feeling the play of muscles beneath his shirt. Luca groaned into her mouth, his own hands tangling in her hair. When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, Luca rested his forehead against hers. "I love you," he said softly, his voice rough with emotion. "God help me, I love you, Sofia." Sofia's heart soared. She had known, deep down, that her feelings for Luca went far beyond attraction or even affection. But hearing him say the words, seeing the vulnerability in his eyes, made it real in a way it hadn't been before. "I love you too," she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "So much." Luca's answering smile was radiant, transforming his face in a way Sofia had never seen before. He kissed her again, slower this time, pouring all his love and devotion into the gesture. As the kiss deepened, Sofia felt a familiar heat building in her core. She pressed closer to Luca, her body molding to his. "Luca," she breathed against his lips, "I need you." A low growl rumbled in Luca's chest. In one fluid motion, he stood, scooping Sofia into his arms. She wrapped her legs around his waist, her lips finding his neck as he carried her up the stairs. They stumbled into the bedroom, hands frantically pulling at clothes. Sofia's shirt hit the floor, followed quickly by Luca's. As her back hit the mattress, Sofia took a moment to admire Luca's body - all lean muscle and intricate tattoos. Luca hovered over her, his eyes dark with desire. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice strained with the effort of holding back. Sofia nodded, pulling him down for a searing kiss. "I've never been more sure of anything in my life," she murmured against his lips. That was all the encouragement Luca needed. His hands and mouth seemed to be everywhere at once, leaving trails of fire across Sofia's skin. She arched into his touch, desperate for more. When Luca finally entered her, it felt like coming home. They moved together in perfect synchronicity, their bodies speaking a language all their own. Sofia lost herself in the sensation, in the feeling of completeness that washed over her. As they lay tangled together afterward, both breathless and sated, Sofia felt a sense of peace she hadn't experienced in years. Whatever challenges lay ahead, whatever obstacles they might face, she knew they would face them together. Luca pressed a soft kiss to her temple, his arms tightening around her. "What are you thinking?" he murmured. Sofia smiled, tracing patterns on his chest. "I'm thinking that for the first time in my life, I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be." Luca's answering smile was soft, vulnerable in a way she'd never seen before. "Me too," he said, capturing her lips in a tender kiss. As they drifted off to sleep, wrapped in each other's arms, Sofia knew that their story was far from over. There would be challenges ahead, dangers to face and obstacles to overcome. But with Luca by her side, she was ready for anything. Together, they would build a new empire - one founded on love, trust, and the unbreakable bond between them. The game had changed, but Sofia had never felt more prepared to play. With Luca as her partner, her lover, her everything, she knew that they were unstoppable. And as she closed her eyes, nestling closer to Luca's warmth, Sofia smiled. The future had never looked brighter.
