Chapter 12

1408 Words
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the prodigal son and his runaway princess." Vivian Blackwood's voice dripped with sarcasm as she led Sofia and Luca into her office. The room was a stark contrast to the nondescript exterior of the building – sleek, modern, and filled with cutting-edge technology. Luca rolled his eyes, but Sofia could see the fondness in his expression. "Good to see you too, Viv. Thanks for meeting us on such short notice." Vivian waved a hand dismissively, settling into a plush leather chair behind her desk. "When the great Luca Moretti calls in a favor, who am I to refuse? Especially when it comes with such... interesting company." Her piercing gaze settled on Sofia, who fought the urge to squirm. She felt like Vivian was looking right through her, reading every secret, every fear. "Sofia Russo," Vivian said, a hint of amusement in her voice. "I've been following your career with interest. Never thought I'd see you on this side of the law, though." Sofia lifted her chin, meeting Vivian's gaze head-on. "Sometimes the law isn't enough to get justice." Vivian's lips quirked in a half-smile. "Oh, I like her, Luca. She's got fire." Luca's hand came to rest on the small of Sofia's back, a gesture that didn't go unnoticed by Vivian's sharp eyes. "She's got more than that. She's the key to bringing down Marco Russo's entire operation." For the next hour, they filled Vivian in on everything that had happened – the ledger, the betrayal, the attacks. Vivian listened intently, occasionally typing notes into a sleek laptop. When they finished, she let out a low whistle. "You two certainly know how to stir up trouble. But taking down Marco Russo? That's a tall order, even for you, Luca." "That's why we need your help," Luca said, leaning forward. "Your resources, your connections. We can't do this alone." Vivian drummed her fingers on the desk, considering. "It's risky. If this goes south, we could all end up dead. Or worse." Sofia spoke up, her voice steady despite her racing heart. "We understand the risks. But this is bigger than us. My father's corruption goes all the way to the top. If we don't stop him, who will?" Vivian's gaze softened slightly as she looked at Sofia. "You really believe that, don't you? That you can make a difference?" Sofia nodded, feeling Luca's silent support beside her. "I have to. Otherwise, what's the point of any of this?" A long moment of silence stretched between them. Finally, Vivian sighed, a rueful smile on her face. "Alright, kids. I'm in. God help me, but I'm in." The next few hours were a whirlwind of activity. Vivian set them up with new identities, untraceable phones, and a safehouse on the outskirts of the city. As she worked, she peppered them with questions about the ledger and Marco's operations. "The key," Vivian explained, "is to hit him where it hurts. We need to cut off his supply lines, turn his allies against him, and expose his corruption to the world. It won't be easy, but with the information in that ledger, we've got a fighting chance." As the day wore on, Sofia found herself struggling to keep her eyes open. The adrenaline crash from their earlier escape, combined with the information overload, left her exhausted. Luca noticed her fatigue, his hand coming to rest on her shoulder. "We should get some rest," he said to Vivian. "It's been a long night." Vivian nodded, her expression softening slightly. "Of course. The safehouse is ready. I'll have my team continue working on decrypting the rest of the ledger. We'll reconvene tomorrow." As they prepared to leave, Vivian pulled Luca aside. Sofia couldn't hear what was said, but she saw the serious expression on both their faces. When Luca returned to her side, he seemed tenser than before. The ride to the safehouse was quiet, both of them lost in their own thoughts. Sofia found her gaze drawn to Luca's profile, admiring the strong line of his jaw, the intensity in his dark eyes. Despite everything, or perhaps because of it, her attraction to him only seemed to grow stronger. The safehouse turned out to be a modest apartment in a nondescript building. As they entered, Sofia was struck by how... normal it looked. A far cry from the opulent mansions she'd grown up in or the stark efficiency of Vivian's office. "Home sweet home," Luca said with a wry smile, dropping their bags by the door. "At least for now." Sofia wandered into the living room, her fingers trailing along the back of a worn couch. "It's nice," she said softly. "Cozy." Luca came up behind her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "You should get some sleep," he murmured, his breath tickling her ear. "Take the bedroom. I'll keep watch." Sofia turned to face him, suddenly very aware of how close they were standing. "Luca," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "What did Vivian say to you? Before we left?" Luca's expression tightened, a shadow passing over his features. "Nothing you need to worry about." "Don't do that," Sofia said, surprising herself with the intensity in her voice. "Don't shut me out. We're in this together, remember?" Luca's eyes searched her face, and Sofia felt her breath catch at the vulnerability she saw there. After a long moment, he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Vivian thinks there might be a mole in my organization," he admitted. "Someone feeding information to your father. It's how they found us at the cabin." Sofia felt a chill run down her spine. "Who?" Luca shook his head. "I don't know. But I intend to find out." The determination in his voice, the dangerous glint in his eye – it should have frightened Sofia. Instead, she felt a rush of heat, a thrill of excitement. Without thinking, she reached out, her hand coming to rest on Luca's chest. She could feel his heart racing beneath her palm, matching the frantic beat of her own. "We'll figure it out," she said softly. "Together." Luca's hand came up to cover hers, his thumb tracing small circles on her wrist. The simple touch sent shivers down Sofia's spine. "Sofia," Luca breathed, his voice rough with emotion. "You should know... being with me, it's dangerous. I'm not a good man. I've done things-" Sofia cut him off, pressing a finger to his lips. "I know who you are, Luca. I've seen the good and the bad. And I'm still here." For a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. Luca's gaze dropped to Sofia's lips, and she found herself leaning in, drawn by an irresistible force. But just as their lips were about to meet, a sharp knock at the door made them spring apart. Luca's hand went to his gun, his body instantly tense. "Stay here," he ordered, moving silently towards the door. Sofia's heart raced as she watched Luca peer through the peephole. To her surprise, his posture relaxed slightly. "It's okay," he said, holstering his weapon. "It's Enzo." As Luca opened the door to reveal his consigliere, Sofia felt a mix of relief and frustration. Relief that it wasn't an enemy at their door, but frustration at yet another interruption of her moment with Luca. Enzo entered, his eyes widening slightly as he took in the scene – Sofia and Luca, standing close, both slightly flushed. "Boss," Enzo said, his voice gruff. "We've got a problem. A big one." Luca's expression hardened, the dangerous don replacing the vulnerable man Sofia had glimpsed moments before. "What is it?" he demanded. Enzo's eyes flicked to Sofia, then back to Luca. "It's Giulia. She's been taken." Sofia watched as all the color drained from Luca's face. In that moment, she realized that despite everything they'd been through, despite the growing connection between them, there was still so much about Luca Moretti that she didn't know. As Luca and Enzo huddled together, speaking in urgent, hushed tones, Sofia felt a chill of premonition. The game had changed once again, and she had a feeling that the real danger was only just beginning. Whatever came next, one thing was certain: their fight against Marco Russo had just become a lot more personal. And Sofia knew that a cornered Luca Moretti was the most dangerous Luca of all.
