Chapter 15 — Confirmed
Elena's eyes, when she finally caught her reflection in the polished surface of Tobias's ceremonial bowl, were gold — pure, molten gold, the same color the elder had glimpsed at the territory border three years ago, except now they didn't fade back to brown after a few seconds. Now they stayed.
The pack circle around her had gone utterly silent, three hundred wolves staring at her with an expression she'd never seen directed at her before in her entire life: reverence.
"Rise," Tobias said softly, extending a hand to help her up from where Damian had caught her. "Rise, Elena Ashwood. This pack owes you an apology three years overdue."
The use of her true surname — a name she'd never known was hers until this exact moment — sent a shiver through her that had nothing to do with the lingering ache of the ritual.
Damian hadn't let go of her hand since the moment the light faded, and when she looked at him, she found him watching her with an expression of such raw, unguarded wonder that it momentarily stole the breath from her lungs.
"You're really her," he said quietly, just for her. "The line everyone thought was gone. You've been here this entire time, and I—" He stopped himself, shaking his head. "Elena, I am so sorry. For everything."
Before she could respond, a figure detached itself from the watching crowd and moved toward the center of the circle with unhurried, deliberate steps.
Kade Osric.
He'd been present as an observer, Elena realized belatedly, part of the formal council protocol that required rival territory representation for verifications of significant political weight. She hadn't expected him to move, hadn't expected the entire clearing to go even more silent than it already was as he approached.
Kade stopped three feet from her — the exact distance, she noted distantly, that Damian had stood three years ago during the rejection — and, without a word of preamble, lowered himself to one knee.
The gesture rippled through the crowd like a physical shockwave. An alpha, kneeling to an unranked omega — no, she reminded herself dizzily, not unranked anymore, never truly unranked at all — in the middle of a rival pack's territory, in full view of Crimson Hollow's entire council.
"Elena Ashwood," Kade said, his voice carrying clearly across the clearing, formal and deliberate. "On behalf of Ashgrove Pack, I offer my recognition of your bloodline, and my pack's full support, should you ever require it." He looked up at her, storm-gray eyes steady and unflinching. "I meant what I told you two nights ago. Unlike some in this circle, I would never be foolish enough to reject what you represent."
The words landed with obvious deliberate precision, aimed as much at Damian as at Elena, and she felt the tension in Damian's grip on her hand tighten instantly.
Margaret Cross, standing at the edge of the clearing with an expression carved from stone, watched the entire display with the particular stillness of a woman calculating the political fallout in real time.
"This changes everything," Margaret said, loud enough to carry, cutting through the charged silence before it could stretch any longer. "The council will need to convene immediately to determine this pack's formal position." Her gaze flicked, sharp and pointed, toward her son. "And certain existing arrangements will need to be reevaluated in light of tonight's confirmation."
Elena caught the subtext even before she saw Vivienne's face at the edge of the crowd — pale, tight-jawed, watching the scene unfold with an expression that mixed genuine alarm with something colder, more calculating underneath.
Whatever careful political balance had existed in Ravenshade three days ago, Elena understood with sudden, dizzying clarity, had just shattered as completely as the conference room windows had two nights before.
And she was standing at the exact center of the wreckage.
