As experienced archeologists, my ex-husband and I both were mystified about the purpose and design of the flat, four-wheeled metal cart with the vertical handle or post at one end. It looked like a modern hydraulic automobile jack; the kind that goes under the vehicle and is then raised by pumping the long handle that extends from one end. The wheels were cast iron and mounted on solid axles. They turned easily, but squeaked from lack of lubrication for the many years of inactivity.
