Once in the forest. I dig a burrow. Where Emma can have a nap. I’ll go get food.
I lay down and listen. My ears twitch listening to all sounds possible. I hear the wind, birds, and the sounds scratching. I’m hoping that’s a deer. So I head north towards The scratching. But what I find is a raccoon scratching a tree after watching it. I get ready to pounce. Opening my jaws wide. I tip toe as quietly towards the raccoon as possible. Once I’m 2 feet away- I snatch it- shaking it vigorously until it dies. With my meal in my jaws. I run to Emma. She’ll play with her food before she lll eat it. But that’s fine. Every kid hunts differently.
It takes me 2 minutes at a dead sprint to get back to Emma. I have to make sure I smell the burrow before I give the raccoon making sure no male has been near.
I sigh in relief knowing we’re still safe. I give Emma the raccoon and then walk backward into my burrow. I’m going to take a nap too. But I want to be able to see if anyone followed my suv.
Before I know it 12 hours have pass and its a new day. No one comes near us. And with that I feel brave enough to search the house today.
We go on a hunt together catching sight of a freshly killed dear just 30ft behind us. My instinct are screaming at me to run. But I shift back so I can have my thumbs. I smell the air. I smell nothing. But I see a note.
“The deer is for you and Emma. (I heard you say her name that day in the mall) I’m not here to hurt you or her. But I will be watching from the shadows so you can rest and know you safe. And I hope in time I can earn your trust.”
