Three days’ ride from Etowah, and he was in the sparsely inhabited woodlands between the small Este towns of Chalahume and Alibamu. “You see it, too?” Jacob reined in alongside him. Tobias nodded. Above the trees in the direction of Alibamu, a warning marred the clear blue sky. “Smoke ahead. Too close to be the trading post. Could be a homestead,” he said. “Be on the watch for riders.” Tobias dismounted and led his horse into the thick woods bracketing the path. Kojo and Duck led the few mules they’d brought on the short trading excursion and tethered them to scrub pines. “The wind carries the stench of Laradians,” Kojo said with a snarl.
